Job Title: Automation & Application Developer

Salary: £39,994 - £59,000 per annum depending upon experience

Location: Peterborough, UK

About IPSD

Caterpillar's Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests and manufactures 0.5 to 18L Cat and Perkins engines that power over 5000 applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives. Caterpillar's company strategy includes sustainability as one of four focus areas and IPSD is engaged and actively preparing green energy solutions for the future.

Job Summary

Join our team and be a valued contributor working collaboratively within a group of developers – supporting a global Test Data Systems (TDS) team – UK and China. TDS exists to provide world leading automation solutions to maximise availability, capability and quality data output (throughput) for our Test Facilities (testbeds) developing off-highway industrial power systems (Battery, eDriveline and internal combustion engine products).

  • Role is 5 days a week on site in Peterborough
  • No travel requirements (project opportunities may arise)

What You Will Do

Automation development for power system test cells using 3rd party software:

  • Morphée
  • CANape
  • DATaQ Pro
  • Matlab
  • Osiris

With opportunities to support development and maintenance of in-house desktop applications and scripts used to support the automation of the end-to-end test process.

Work within an Agile work process utilising Azure DevOps

What You Have

Information Capture: Knowledge of the methods, channels and processes to obtain needed information; ability to identify, capture and document relevant business information in an auditable, organized, understandable and easily retrievable manner.

Level Working Knowledge:

  • Follows defined procedures to document all routine information.
  • Identifies relevant established standards, policies and practices.

  • Uses automated tools to capture, organize and archive relevant information.
  • Cites examples of different types of relevant information that need to be captured.

Standard Operating Procedures: Knowledge of established standard operating procedures (SOP); ability to design, implement and evaluate standard operating procedures affecting daily and strategic business operations in order to increase operational efficiency.

Level Working Knowledge:

  • Adjusts SOPs according to changes in organizational and industry procedures.
  • Tracks deviations from and modifications to existing SOPs in business operations.
  • Ensures compliance with industry standards, regulations and policies.
  • Assists in establishing a standard operating procedure based on workflow and environment review.
  • Reviews the efficiency of standard operating procedures in terms of performance improvement.

Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.

Level Working Knowledge:

  • Approaches a situation or problem by defining the problem or issue and determining its significance.
  • Makes a systematic comparison of two or more alternative solutions.
  • Uses flow charts, Pareto charts, fish diagrams, etc. to disclose meaningful data patterns.

Product Testing: Knowledge of product testing approaches, techniques and tools; ability to design, plan and execute testing strategies and tactics to ensure product quality at all stages of manufacturing.

  • Documents test process and results; prepares and analyzes defect-tracking reports.
  • Summarizes features of a specific product-testing process and associated procedures.
  • Tests components for compliance with functional requirements and established conventions.
  • Discusses and compares usability, safety and integration testing.
  • Develops product-testing procedures; participates in selecting testing environment and tools.

Troubleshooting Technical Problems: Knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing or product development environment.

Level Working Knowledge:

  • Documents common hardware, software and communications problems and likely resolutions.
  • Troubleshoots typical technical problems in a specific area.
  • Works with vendor-specific diagnostic guides, tools and utilities to discover application problems.
  • Adheres to standard troubleshooting procedures to ensure effectiveness of resolutions.
  • Participates in setting evaluation standards and criterion for troubleshooting.

  • Experience object-oriented programming
  • Experience with the following programming languages - C#, Python, SQL
  • Experience with source control (GIT)
  • May have mechanical engineering knowledge (not essential)
  • Keen and able to learn new skills
