DEPUTY SPONSORED UNDERGRADUATES STAFF OFFICER
Responsibility.
The Deputy Sponsored Undergraduates Staff Officer (DSUSO) is responsible to the Sponsored Undergraduates Staff Officer (SUSO), as 1st Reporting Officer, and Commander Universities (CDR U), as 2nd Reporting Officer, for the training management, duty of care, professional and military development, and personnel management of RN Sponsored Undergraduates (SUs). DSUSO is to achieve this through close contact (enabled via personal visits or virtual engagement) with SUs, aimed at ensuring the maximum possible number of Cadets subsequently arrive at BRNC for, and pass, Initial Naval Training (Officer) (INT(O)). A key element of the role is the promotion and development of 'esprit de corps' of the SUs through Jolly, Drummond and Greenwich divisions.
Primary roles.
To manage the SU schemes, enabling all RN SUs (Medical Cadets, Dental Cadets, In-Service Medical Officers, Defence STEM Undergraduates, University Cadetship Entrants, Undergraduate Apprentices, Upper Yard Men (Engineering) and Bursars) to:
- Obtain the best degree classification possible.
- Complete professional training as directed by the relevant professional bodies / councils.
- Develop their character and leadership qualities and physical fitness standards.
- Develop and maintain their enthusiasm and determination for their RN careers.
- Pursue their maximum chances of success at INT(O) through experiencesand exposure to the RN during the SU Scheme.
- To act as the Deputy Divisional Officer for the New Entry Medical Officers (NEMO) and New Entry Dental Officers (NEDO) when they are undertaking Phase 1 INT(O) at BRNC.
Secondary roles.
To undertake whole College duties as required of BRNC Staff Officers, noting that Cdr U is to be consulted in the event of any conflicts between this and the primary roles.
Principal Tasks
DSUSO's principal tasks are to:
- Report to SUSO on the general welfare, professional progress and development of Naval pre-INT(O) training and ethos of RN SUs.
- Report to and advise SUSO on issues, welfare, training risks and warnings in relation to SUs.
- Oversee Sponsored Cadet Manager (SCMAN) and Sponsored Undergraduates Admin Officer (SUAO) WRT pay, administration and uniformed training of all RN Sponsored Undergraduates and Cadets including management of the Jolly, Drummond and Greenwich Division Database.
- Administrate Divisional Standing Orders while providing direction and guidance for SUs on Policy.
- Manage, Authorise and Maintain training co-ordination of all SUs going to Sea, attending Training Courses outside the UK, as well as other SU travel abroad.
- Act as Course Planning Manager for all SU Acquaint Courses, Regional visits, Divisional meetings, including final 3 weeks of INT(O) post NEMO Lite.
- Manage specific projects assigned by SUSO.
- Act as ePC Checking Officer for the SU Department.
- Engage with BRNC UPO to ensure the UPO Contract delivers the correct support to SUs.
- Act as Logistics SME for the SU Department.
Authority
DSUSO is authorised to:
Deal directly with University and Service authorities regarding the military training, career progress and administration of SUs.
Prepare letters dealing with university matters for signature by SUSO (letters dealing with routine university matters may be signed by DSUSO).
Management of warnings processes in accordance with the appropriate standing orders.
Accountability
DSUSO is accountable to SUSO, as 1RO, and Cdr U, as 2RO, in the execution of their primary roles.
DSUSO may be accountable to Cdr BRNC, Cdr T and 1st Lieutenant in the execution of their secondary roles.
DSUSO has functional and tasking authority over all SUs.
DSUSO is Line Manager to SUAO.
