Lead Mechanical Design Engineer

Sheffield – Office-Based (with Occasional Site Visits)

We are seeking a proactive and highly skilled
Lead Mechanical Design Engineer
to take a key role within our client's growing Design Team. Based at the Sheffield office, you will lead mechanical design projects from concept through to completion, ensuring practical and efficient solutions are delivered to the highest standards.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced mechanical design engineer who thrives in a hands-on design environment, enjoys mentoring others, and wants to influence design quality and innovation across the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of mechanical components and assemblies from initial concept through to manufacture and installation ("cradle to grave").
  • Mentor and support other mechanical designers within the team, sharing technical expertise and promoting best practices in design, documentation, and review.
  • Report directly to the
    Head of Design
    , working closely with the
    Engineering Manager
    and
    Project Leads
    to ensure cohesive project delivery.
  • Perform detailed hand calculations, including stress analysis, load assessments, and joint design evaluations.
  • Produce and review detailed 3D models and engineering drawings using
    SolidWorks
    (AutoCAD 3D or Inventor experience also considered).
  • Liaise with fabrication and workshop teams to ensure manufacturability and adherence to welding and fabrication standards.
  • Apply and interpret relevant British and international design standards (BS, EN, ISO).
  • Provide technical guidance and troubleshooting support to project managers, fabricators, and site teams.
  • Maintain compliance with all internal quality, safety, and environmental standards.

Skills & Experience

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in
    Mechanical Engineering
    .
  • Proven experience in
    mechanical design engineering
    , ideally within
    infrastructure, fabrication, or heavy engineering
    .
  • Familiarity with
    FEA tools
    (e.g., ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation).
  • Strong capability in manual hand calculations and practical mechanical design.
  • In-depth understanding of welding principles, fabrication methods, and manufacturing processes.
  • Proficient in
    SolidWorks
    (preferred), with
    AutoCAD 3D
    or
    Inventor
    also considered.
  • Familiarity with industry standards (BS, EN, ISO).
  • Experience in
    infrastructure or construction-based mechanical design
    .
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
  • A collaborative mindset with the ability to mentor and develop junior team members.
