Ipswich, Suffolk, United Kingdom National Grid Full time £61,000 - £75,000 per year

Join us and help drive efficiency in the green energy transition.

As owners of Wales and England's electricity transmission network, we take green energy seriously. Between now and 2026 we're investing £29 billion into the decarbonisation of energy systems.

Would you like to be involved in this vital transition and be part of a critically important UK infrastructure project? If you're an experienced Quantity Surveyor who wants more responsibility and is looking for a stepping-stone into management along with the chance to work on high-value, complex schemes - we'd like to hear from you

This is an exciting opportunity to join a great project team and to play a key role in the UK's transition to clean energy within Strategic Infrastructure team as a Lead Quantity Surveyor for Sea Link, where you'll be responsible for providing contract and commercial administration and guidance to project teams during the development and delivery of large and complex infrastructure projects ensuring that they are achieved safely, on time and within budget.

Our customers include everyone who uses electricity in England and Wales. Acting on behalf of these people, you'll help ensure that we deliver our projects in the most commercially effective way.

In this role you can enjoy our hybrid working from office and home. You'll be flexible to regular travel to sites in Kent and Suffolk and working from our London office as required. You'll also have a driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK.

Key accountabilities

You'll take charge of the effective pre-contract and post-contract responsibilities of a large contract (over £0.5bn) and provide support to all commercial post tender activities associated with a project. Acting as the lead commercial representative providing guidance on commercial and contract management considerations and advising on contract options and budget estimates, including risk & contingency allowances.

You'll be responsible for the quality assurance of construction contracts, including maintaining accurate contractor data records, providing commercial and contract management support, guidance and coaching to the team and ensure contractor costs are robustly managed across the portfolio of projects. You'll also attend contract risk reviews and ensure the project team is employing strong risk management techniques to accurately reflect project risks.

You'll ensure contract compliance, through effective contract management activities including monitoring of spend against agreed budgets, KPIs and other metrics across the project. Helping your team support the development and maintenance of cost forecasts will be a key responsibility.

You'll produce all necessary contract forms such as valuations and payment recommendations and instructions and communications for the assigned project, leading on the reviews and assessment change, supporting any escalation procedures and dispute avoidance and resolution processes.

You may have a small number of direct reports and will provide guidance and support to the more junior members of the team including Graduates, Assistant Quantity Surveyors and Quantity Surveyors. You'll also build strong relationships with a range of stakeholders; including Project Managers, Planners, Accountants, Operational colleagues, contractors, colleagues in procurement, regulation and legal teams, reaching out to senior stakeholders for assistance when it's needed.

About you

This is an experienced Lead Quantity Surveyor role and you'll be leading on a large-scale contract. You'll have experience of delivering several projects already and be able to demonstrate experience of contract and commercial management, stakeholder engagement, risk management, tenders and procurement and negotiation.

Ideally, you'll have a degree in quantity surveying or a related discipline such as construction management or construction law and several years relevant experience or significant experience of working as a QS on large construction projects. You'll have a good understanding of NEC4 contracts (Option A, C and E). Ideally you have experience on infrastructure projects, but this isn't essential as you might have a contractor or consultant background, for example.
