About the Role

As a Semi-Senior Auditor, you'll be responsible for planning and executing audit assignments for a varied client portfolio, working under the supervision of senior auditors and managers. You'll gain valuable experience across different industries and entity types, building your confidence and technical capabilities as you progress towards senior auditor and management positions.

Key Responsibilities

Audit Planning & Execution

  • Plan and execute audit assignments for sole traders, partnerships, limited companies, and charities
  • Perform risk assessments and identify key audit areas requiring focus
  • Develop audit programmes and testing strategies appropriate to client size and complexity
  • Execute substantive testing procedures including analytical review, sampling, and detailed testing
  • Document audit work clearly and comprehensively in accordance with ISAs (UK)
  • Review and evaluate internal controls and assess their effectiveness
  • Identify control weaknesses and make recommendations for improvements
  • Ensure all audit work complies with auditing standards and firm quality control procedures

Financial Statement Review & Analysis

  • Review financial statements for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with accounting standards
  • Perform analytical procedures to identify unusual trends or discrepancies
  • Review accounting estimates and judgements for reasonableness
  • Verify completeness and accuracy of disclosures in financial statements
  • Ensure compliance with FRS 102, FRS 105, and other relevant accounting frameworks
  • Identify and resolve accounting and disclosure issues
  • Prepare audit adjustments and reclassification entries

Client Engagement & Communication

  • Build strong, professional relationships with client finance teams and management
  • Liaise with clients to request information, schedules, and supporting documentation
  • Conduct client meetings and walkthroughs of systems and processes
  • Explain audit requirements and findings clearly to clients
  • Respond to client queries professionally and in a timely manner
  • Provide excellent client service that reflects the firm's values and professionalism
  • Identify opportunities to add value and improve client processes

Team Leadership & Development

  • Supervise and review work performed by audit assistants and trainees
  • Provide guidance, coaching, and feedback to junior team members
  • Delegate tasks appropriately and monitor progress
  • Review working papers prepared by junior staff for accuracy and completeness
  • Support the development of less experienced team members
  • Contribute to a positive, collaborative team environment

Technical Compliance & Quality

  • Ensure all audit work meets ISAs (UK) and firm quality control standards
  • Complete audit files in accordance with firm policies and deadlines
  • Prepare audit completion checklists and ensure all procedures are documented
  • Assist with audit clearance and resolution of review points
  • Stay current with changes in auditing standards, accounting standards, and legislation
  • Participate in technical training and CPD activities
  • Contribute to maintaining the firm's audit quality and reputation

Reporting & Documentation

  • Prepare draft audit reports and management letters
  • Document significant audit findings and conclusions
  • Prepare audit summaries and key issues memoranda
  • Assist managers with audit completion and sign-off procedures
  • Maintain comprehensive, well-organised audit files
  • Ensure working papers are clear, logical, and support audit conclusions

What We're Looking For

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Part-qualified or fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, or equivalent) with audit specialism
  • Minimum 4 years' audit experience within an accountancy practice environment
  • Strong knowledge of ISAs (UK) and audit methodology
  • Solid understanding of UK accounting standards (FRS 102, FRS 105, UK GAAP)
  • Proven experience planning and executing audit assignments
  • Experience auditing limited companies, charities, and other entity types
  • Competent in reviewing financial statements and identifying accounting issues
  • Experience supervising and reviewing junior staff work
  • Proficiency with audit software and Microsoft Excel

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Experience with audit software platforms (CCH Audit Automation, CaseWare, or similar)
  • Exposure to specialist audits (charities, academies, pension schemes, solicitors' accounts)
  • Understanding of Companies Act requirements and filing obligations
  • Experience with group audits and consolidations
  • Knowledge of IFRS and international accounting standards
  • Experience liaising with external stakeholders (banks, solicitors, HMRC)
