About the Role
Our client is seeking an ambitious and technically skilled Personal Tax Manager to join their Central London practice. This role offers the opportunity to manage a diverse portfolio of clients, lead tax projects, and develop your career within a dynamic and growing firm in the heart of the capital.
Key Responsibilities
Client Portfolio Management
- Manage a portfolio of personal tax clients including high net worth individuals, entrepreneurs, senior executives, and property investors
- Prepare and review personal tax returns for complex tax affairs including multiple income sources
- Oversee capital gains tax computations including share disposals, property transactions, and business asset disposals
- Handle inheritance tax planning and compliance matters
- Manage trust and estate tax returns where required
- Ensure all tax filings are completed accurately and meet HMRC deadlines
Tax Planning & Advisory
- Provide proactive tax planning advice to clients throughout the year
- Advise on tax-efficient structuring of income, investments, and remuneration
- Support clients with incorporation planning and business restructuring
- Deliver tax advisory projects including share schemes, EIS/SEIS investments, and R&D claims
- Identify opportunities to optimize clients' tax positions
- Prepare technical memoranda and advice notes for clients
HMRC Management
- Handle all HMRC correspondence, queries, and compliance matters on behalf of clients
- Manage tax enquiries and aspect investigations
- Prepare and submit voluntary disclosures including Let Property Campaign and other campaigns
- Negotiate settlements and time to pay arrangements where necessary
- Stay informed of HMRC practice and changes in approach
Team Supervision & Development
- Supervise and mentor Tax Semi-Seniors and Tax Assistants
- Review and approve tax computations and returns prepared by junior staff
- Provide technical guidance and support to team members
- Conduct performance reviews and identify training needs
- Delegate work effectively and manage team workflow
- Support the recruitment and onboarding of new team members
Practice Management
- Take responsibility for billing, fee management, and WIP control for your portfolio
- Maintain strong client relationships and act as primary point of contact
- Contribute to business development activities and client retention
- Identify cross-selling opportunities with other service lines
- Maintain accurate time recording and budget management
- Support the implementation of process improvements and efficiency initiatives
Required Skills & Experience
Essential
- Minimum 5-7 years' experience in UK personal taxation
- ATT or CTA qualified (or part-qualified CTA with substantial experience)
- Strong technical knowledge across income tax, capital gains tax, and IHT
- Experience managing a varied client portfolio independently
- Proven ability to handle complex personal tax matters
- Experience supervising and developing junior staff
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage competing priorities
- Proficiency in tax software (CCH, TaxCalc, IRIS, or similar)
Desirable
- ACA/ACCA qualification or exemptions
- Experience with non-domiciled individuals and international tax matters
- Knowledge of employment-related securities and share schemes
- Exposure to trust and estate taxation
- Experience with corporate tax and owner-managed businesses
- Understanding of partnership taxation
- Previous involvement in practice development or business development activities
