The Historic Dockyard Chatham, the best preserved of all Georgian dockyards, is the world's most complete dockyard of the Age of Sail. Today, The Historic Dockyard Chatham, is the leading example of a mixed-use heritage estate. A vitally significant historic estate delivering outstanding preservation, an award-winning independent museum, commercial estate, Higher Education campus, leading film location and residential community.

As a registered charity that employs over 140 staff and 300 volunteers, people are at the heart of our Dockyard community. Our culture strives for excellence across the board and our team are hugely passionate and engaged in all aspects of our work. From historic building preservation through the diverse re-use of our historic estate, to engaging the widest possible audiences in learning about the significance and history of the former Royal Dockyard; The Historic Dockyard Chatham is a workplace like no other.

The Role

This role plays a vital part in keeping our historic 80-acre site in excellent condition. Your work will be varied and hands-on, from maintaining grounds and buildings to supporting events and responding to maintenance issues. You'll carry out scheduled inspections, assist with repairs, and ensure health and safety standards are upheld at all times. This is a practical role for someone who enjoys working outdoors, solving problems, and taking pride in maintaining a unique heritage environment. You'll be part of a friendly Estates Team, helping us preserve the Dockyard for future generations.

About You

You'll be proactive, well-organised, and comfortable working independently or as part of a team. A clean UK driving licence and basic Health & Safety training are essential, along with the ability to undertake tasks that involve manual handling and outdoor work. Experience in general maintenance or similar roles is important, and knowledge of basic trades such as plumbing, carpentry, or decorating would be an advantage. Additional qualifications like IPAF, PASMA, or forklift operation are desirable, but not essential. Most importantly, you'll have a positive attitude and a willingness to learn. If you do not hold a driving licence, please contact us to discuss further.
