Crewe CW PL, United Kingdom PRAGMATIC DESIGN SOLUTIONS LIMITED Full time £20,623 - £21,255 per year

Job Overview

We are looking for a contractor to join a cross-functional R&D team delivering best-in-class exterior lighting for premium vehicles. You'll develop, integrate, and validate lighting electronics and software from concept through series production, working closely with group counterparts and suppliers to land robust customer functions on time and to quality.

What you'll do

  • Define and develop electrical system software & functional requirements for exterior lighting based on vehicle specifications.
  • Engineer interfaces to broader E/E systems (e.g., power distribution, networks) to support seamless lamp integration across all vehicle lines.
  • Collaborate with group partners to develop lighting functions, systems, and architectures; understand standard functions (low beam, high beam, indicators, brake).
  • Manage software releases in line with calibration maturity and build timing; coordinate validation on vehicles and hardware rigs/HIL.
  • Support key business customers (Production Planning, Certification, Aftersales); drive structured problem solving and supplier management.
  • Contribute to feasibility and concept studies, project planning, and Functional Safety (FuSi) understanding/implementation.

What you'll bring

  • Proven experience in automotive exterior lighting electronics and/or system integration within OEM or Tier-1 settings.
  • Hands-on with vehicle networks and diagnostics (e.g., CAN, LIN, FlexRay; tools such as IDEX, ODIS or similar).
  • Strong CAD/CATIA skills for integration and packaging collaboration.
  • Logical thinker with experience identifying root causes and managing timing plans/resources.
  • Degree in automotive electronics, electrical engineering, physics, or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent communication across R&D and partner organisations; comfortable working autonomously.

Nice to have

  • Experience from adjacent high-reliability sectors (aviation, defence) that translates to lighting robustness.
  • German language skills for collaboration with group partners.

Ways of working & logistics

  • Hours: 35 per week; core hours typically 09:30–14:30 (hybrid working; on-site as required).
  • Travel: UK-based role with international (primarily European/Germany) travel to group/supplier sites.
  • Licence: Full driving licence essential (client driving approval may be required).

About the team

You'll join the Exterior & Interior Lighting team, working cross-functionally with Design, Manufacturing, Quality, Electrical Engineering, Group partners and more to create future-ready lighting systems and products.
