SEN Teaching Assistant

The SEN Teaching Assistant provides essential support to pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in mainstream or specialist educational settings. The role involves helping pupils access learning, managing behaviours, and ensuring they are supported emotionally, socially, and academically to reach their full potential.
Key Responsibilities1. Pupil Support
- Provide 1:1 or small-group assistance to pupils with SEN (e.g., autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, behavioural needs, speech & language difficulties).
- Support pupils in accessing the curriculum, completing tasks, and achieving learning objectives.
- Encourage independence, confidence, and positive behaviour.
- Assist with personal care where required (e.g., toileting, feeding, hygiene).
2. Classroom Support
- Work alongside the class teacher to adapt lesson materials for SEN pupils.
- Support the implementation of pupils' Education, Health & Care Plans (EHCPs).
- Maintain a positive, inclusive and safe learning environment.
- Help plan and deliver tailored interventions and activities.
3. Behaviour Management
- Use appropriate behaviour support strategies to help pupils self-regulate.
- De-escalate challenging situations using approved techniques.
- Promote positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing.
4. Communication & Collaboration
- Liaise with teachers, SENCO, therapists, and other professionals involved in pupil care.
- Maintain accurate records of pupil progress, behaviour, and intervention outcomes.
- Provide feedback to the teacher and SENCO on pupil needs and improvements.
- Engage with parents/carers where necessary.
5. Safeguarding
- Follow safeguarding and child protection policies at all times.
- Report any concerns immediately to the designated safeguarding lead.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional standards.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong understanding of SEN (Autism, ADHD, SEMH, MLD, SLD, PMLD, etc.).
- Patience, empathy, and resilience when supporting challenging behaviours.
- Ability to build positive relationships with children and staff.
- Good communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to follow instructions but also use initiative.
Experience & Qualifications
Essential:
- Experience working with children or young people with additional needs.
- Understanding of safeguarding and behaviour management.
Desirable:
- Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification.
- Training in Team Teach / Positive Handling / Autism / Speech & Language support.
- Experience working in SEN schools, PRUs, or specialist units.
Additional Requirements
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply).
- Right to Work in the UK.
- Reliable, punctual, and committed to supporting vulnerable pupils.

Pay: £14.26-£91.69 per hour
