Boarding House Matron

Overview
The House Matrons play a key role in the daily life of the Boarding House, providing both pastoral and medical care for pupils. They look after the health and wellbeing of Cathedral Choristers and day pupils, ensuring 24-hour care for boarders during term time. The Matrons are trained First Aiders and bring experience in managing childhood illnesses. They also provide comfort and emotional support, often acting as a caring 'home figure' for the boys. Matrons report daily to the Housemaster and work closely with House Tutors and other staff.
1. Day Duties
- Follow all safeguarding policies and procedures (including KCSIE and CCCS).
- Provide first aid to pupils as needed, including during sports fixtures.
- Monitor pupils' eating habits and supervise snacks.
- Escort Choristers to and from rehearsals or services when required.
- Care for unwell pupils in the sickbay.
- Communicate medical updates to staff, the front office, and parents.
2. Boarding Duties
- Sleep in the boarding house when on duty.
- Assist with morning routines (from 0630).
- Supervise breakfast and supper.
- Support evening routines (showers, teeth brushing, bedtime).
- Manage laundry and minor clothing repairs.
- Help with bed changes and maintain dormitory tidiness.
- Organise preparations for choir trips.
- Keep accurate handover notes for the next Matron/staff.
- Listen to and report any pupil concerns.
- Maintain good communication with parents and school staff.
3. Medical Responsibilities
- Keep accurate records of all medication administered.
- Liaise with parents and staff about pupil illness.
- Escort pupils to GP or hospital appointments when necessary.
- Maintain and monitor the medicine cupboard and stock levels.
- Track pupils' weight, height, and general health.
4. Trips
- Accompany Choristers on trips and concert tours, both within the UK and overseas.
This list is not exhaustive. Other reasonable duties may be required as directed by the Headmaster or Housemaster.
