Principal Scientist - Formulation & TrichologyWant to apply Read all the information about this position below, then hit the apply button.We are seeking a Principal Scientist - Formulation & Trichology to lead Tropic's hair care science program. This role combines cosmetic formulation artistry with trichology expertise to develop advanced, science-led solutions that enhance hair health, scalp wellness, and product performance. You will design breakthrough products, apply trichology insights, and lead testing while mentoring junior chemists and advancing Tropic as a leader in hair science.ResponsibilitiesDevelop formulations for hair care products from concept through commercialisation with thorough understanding of different hair care formulations and textures.Apply trichology expertise to design solutions addressing specific hair and scalp needs.Conduct ingredient research, stability studies, and performance evaluations to ensure efficacy and regulatory compliance.Perform mechanical and physical tests (e.g., tensile strength, combing force wet/dry, elasticity, friction).Carry out surface and structural analyses including SEM, light/confocal microscopy, atomic force microscopy, glossmeter readings, and colorimetry (ΔE).Execute conditioning and manageability tests, including curl/volume retention, static charge evaluation, and slip/conditioning assessments.Assess moisture and hydration through water retention, moisture content, and scalp TEWL measurements.Perform trichology-specific evaluations including hair density and growth measurement, hair diameter measurement, shedding/fall count, and anagen/telogen ratio analysis.Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Marketing, Regulatory, Manufacturing) to ensure product feasibility and compliance.Stay ahead of emerging scientific trends, raw materials, and technologies in hair and scalp science.Mentor junior chemists, fostering scientific excellence and continuous improvement.QualificationsBachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Cosmetic Science, or related field (PhD a plus).10-15 years’ experience in developing and testing hair care formulations, with a proven track record of successful product launches.Strong knowledge of trichology principles and hair/scalp biology.Expertise in selecting raw materials, ensuring formulation stability, and navigating regulatory requirements and compliance.Creative problem solver with passion for innovation, strong analytical ability, and attention to detail.What We OfferEmployment Type: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 9am–5pmLocation: On-site at Tropic HQ (near Croydon; accessible by public transport)Salary: CompetitiveBenefits: Generous annual leave, wellbeing support, discount programs, pension, parental leave, exclusive skincare collection, product allowance, and moreAbout TropicSusie, our Founder and CEO, started Tropic as a teenager, selling homemade body scrubs at Greenwich Market.
