We are committed to providing flexible working arrangements to support staff well‑being, including part‑time hours, remote work and flexible start/finish times.Apply fast, check the full description by scrolling below to find out the full requirements for this role.Safety Assurance Manager (Avionics)Location: CrawleyAbout this roleAs Safety Assurance Manager for the Flight Avionics (FLX) business line, you will independently assure and oversee safety engineering activities for bids, projects, SFRD, products and services. You will support the Safety Authority on all aspects of safety management and safety engineering, ensuring compliance with aviation and defence regulations across a broad range of domestic and international customers.Key responsibilitiesSupport the development of next‑generation Mission Management Systems or Secure Information Systems for military helicopter platforms.Continue support and sustainment of in‑service avionics products, including Mission Systems and Secure Intercom Systems.Conduct safety management activities for civil and military approvals such as Part 145 maintenance and Part 21G production.Support delivery of studies that shape future aircraft communication systems.Key tasks and responsibilities (not exhaustive)Plan, coordinate and assure delivery of safe products and solutions.Perform independent verification and validation of safety artefacts.Support the Safety Authority in developing, implementing and continuously improving safety and environmental management systems.Apply engineering governance to product safety throughout the life‑cycle.Ensure all safety activities align with corporate processes and customer requirements.Foster a positive safety culture throughout the organisation.Mentor and develop safety engineering resources.Communicate safety issues to the Technical Director/Safety Authority and relevant stakeholders.Verify that bid and project safety competence requirements are met.Review and approve all safety and environmental artefacts, including safety management plans and safety cases.Desired skills, qualifications and experienceBachelor’s degree (BEng, BSc) in a numerate, scientific or engineering subject, or equivalent training and experience.Experience as a Safety Engineer/Assurance Manager in multi‑disciplinary engineering teams, with knowledge of system engineering processes and product development lifecycles.Experience working directly with OEMs, UK MoD, UK and overseas suppliers in safety‑related roles.Experience in complex system safety case development and safety audits.Detailed knowledge of relevant avionics standards: ARP 4754, ARP 4761, RTCA‑DO‑178C, RTCA‑DO‑254, CS 25‑1309, Def Stan 00‑56, Def Stan 00‑55.Knowledge of international safety legislation: IEC 61508, IEC 62368, EN MIL‑STD‑882, CE/UK CA Marking, REACH.Knowledge of civil and/or military organisational approvals: DAOS/MAOS, Part 145, Part 21G.Experience with Root Cause Analysis or similar formal investigation techniques.Work environmentThe role is based at Thales Avionics in Manor Royal, Crawley, with the option to work from either this site or Green Park, Reading via a hybrid model of remote and office collaboration. Our campus offers a range of facilities including manufacturing, laboratory test rooms, a café and other amenities designed to encourage collaborative working.Security ClearanceThis role requires Security Clearance (SC). Current clearance is advantageous; if not held, the successful applicant will need to obtain, achieve and maintain SC clearance. Candidates should have resided in the UK for the last five years (or a minimum of three years of residence within the last five, subject to additional overseas checks).
