Nottingham, United Kingdom Haematological Malignancy Research Network Full time

Location University Park An exciting opportunity has arisen for a researcher to join respiratory medicine in the Translational Medical Sciences Unit at the University of Nottingham. The post is available as part of a grant funded by the Ruth Strauss Foundation. You will use large datasets to look at lung cancer in people who have never smoked (LCIPNS). The aim of this study is to understand more about this patient group and identify barriers to early diagnosis. To do this we will use a large United Kingdom general practice dataset, which is linked to cancer records. This contains information on almost 4000 people who have never smoked and who developed lung cancer. We will identify all records of LCIPNS patients provide a detailed description of these patients and explore what happens to them in the 2-years before they are diagnosed to see if there are any opportunities to diagnose them sooner. We will identify factors that may be used to better predict who gets LCIPNS and might be used for selection for screening. Applicants are encouraged to discuss the details with the project leads: Dr Emma O’Dowd emma.odowd@nottingham.ac.uk and Professor David Baldwin david.baldwin@nottingham.ac.uk. You will be expected to plan and conduct work using approaches or methodologies and techniques appropriate to the type of research and will be responsible for writing up your work for publication. You will join an established team of clinical researchers and senior academic staff within the academic respiratory medicine department, alongside a group of clinical research fellows and non-clinical PhD students training in respiratory medicine. You must have practical experience of data analysis using CPRD or equivalent primary care datasets and experience of developing new approaches, models, techniques or methods using primary care data. Research in/ knowledge of lung cancer/ publications or poster/ oral presentations in lung cancer research would be desirable. Applicants should also have a PhD or equivalent in computer science, mathematics, statistics or epidemiology or the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience in research area OR be near to completion of a PhD. The University of Nottingham provides generous employment packages whilst supporting the well-being of our staff to help them reach their full potential. As a university employee, you will have an excellent choice of benefits and rewards, including access to fitness and health facilities, staff discounts and travel schemes, along with a competitive holiday allowance and a highly attractive pension scheme.
