Junior GI Surgical Clinical Nurse Specialist | The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust

We are seeking a highly motivated Junior Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgical Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to join our specialist nursing team at the Chelsea site and cover at the other sites if needed. This exciting role provides support across the colorectal surgical pathway and cross‑cover with the upper GI surgical pathway. The Junior GI Surgical CNS will deliver expert, compassionate, and patient‑centred care to individuals with complex gastrointestinal conditions and their families. Working across inpatient and outpatient settings, you will ensure high‑quality specialist support is provided from diagnosis through surgery and beyond, maintaining continuity of care at every stage of the patient journey. Key Responsibilities Provide assessment, symptom management, and holistic support for patients undergoing surgeries. Contribute to patient education and enhanced recovery pathways. Coordinate care to ensure safe, efficient, and timely surgical pathways. Actively contribute to service development, pathway redesign, and quality improvement initiatives. Deliver education and support to patients, families, and colleagues across the wider surgical team. Provide specialist input and continuity of care, supporting timely diagnostics, patient information, and pathway management. Additional Duties Deliver expert assessment, management, and support for patients and their families. Act as a patient advocate, providing education, advice, and information to support informed decision‑making and self‑management. Participate in nurse‑led initiatives, contributing to service development, clinical governance, and quality improvement to ensure safe, high‑quality pathways of care. Work autonomously within professional boundaries while collaborating closely with consultants, allied health professionals, and the wider MDT to ensure seamless coordination and communication. Support patients and their families with empathy and consistency, promoting a holistic approach to care. Act as a positive role‑model, supporting the induction and development of junior colleagues and promoting best nursing practice. Further Responsibilities (as outlined in the attached detailed Job Description) Deliver specialist nursing care for patients with colorectal and upper GI cancers from diagnosis through surgery, adjuvant treatment, and follow‑up. Provide skilled assessment, advice, and support to patients and carers throughout the pathway, ensuring psychological, emotional, and informational needs are addressed. Support nurse‑led and telephone clinics, under supervision when needed, to assess symptoms, coordinate investigations, and provide ongoing advice. Contribute to holistic needs assessments (HNA) and care planning, ensuring timely referrals to other professionals or support services. Participate in ward rounds, MDT meetings, and outpatient clinics to ensure seamless communication and continuity of care. Act as an advocate for patients, ensuring informed decision‑making and promoting self‑management and wellbeing. Support delivery of enhanced recovery and pre‑habilitation programmes where applicable. Develop skills in post‑operative management and patient education for surgical recovery. Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive clinical documentation in line with Trust policy.
