Adaptive Sports Coordinator Under general supervision, the Adaptive Sports Coordinator plans, develops, budgets, markets, schedules, directs, and evaluates county-wide adaptive recreation, inclusive recreation, and adaptive sports programs for individuals with physical, intellectual, cognitive, and/or sensory disabilities. The position manages programs across multiple facilities; coordinates special events and leagues; leads inclusion supports within general recreation programs; and oversees staff, contractors, and volunteers. The Coordinator ensures compliance with ADA, risk management, and County policies; maintains partnerships with schools and community agencies; and delivers participant-centered services that promote access, safety, and belonging. Examples of Duties Plan, promote, present, and evaluate adaptive recreation and sports programs, leagues, clinics, camps, tournaments, and special events across parks, playgrounds, pools, and recreation centers. Coordinate inclusion for participants in general programs (assessments, accommodation plans, behavior/support plans, staff coaching, equipment/adaptations) to ensure meaningful participation. Conduct intake interviews and functional assessments; recommend program placements; communicate with parents/guardians, caregivers, school contacts, and partner agencies. Recruit, select, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate part-time and seasonal staff, contracted instructors/coaches, officials, and volunteers. Develop and manage program budgets; recommend fees/charges; monitor expenditures and revenues; process invoices and contracted staff payments. Coordinate facility/field/pool reservations; develop seasonal program and league schedules; align space needs with Park Maintenance and Facility teams. Specify, purchase, inventory, and maintain adaptive and safety equipment; ensure proper storage, care, and inspection; write and enforce program/league rules and risk controls. Provide internal training on inclusion, disability awareness, de-escalation, and ADA essentials; ensure compliance with County policies, incident reporting, cash handling, and records retention. Work with Marketing to create and implement plans (flyers, social media, web content); present to schools, nonprofits, civic and faith groups; attend community fairs to recruit participants and volunteers. Serve as primary liaison to Lancaster County School District, Special Olympics, and adaptive sports organizations, disability service providers, and regional municipalities to co‑develop programs and shared events. Use registration/reservation software to track enrollment, attendance, volunteer participation, outcomes, and survey data; produce monthly/seasonal reports and year‑end summaries. Lead on-site operations for assigned programs and events; coordinate logistics (parking, custodial, security, medical/first aid, volunteers, vendors, permits). Create schedules, rosters, and reports; administer program set-up in registration software; maintain email lists and communication templates. Knowledge of municipal recreation philosophy; adaptive/therapeutic recreation practices; inclusive coaching strategies; behavior support; risk management; and ADA program accessibility. Knowledge of at least one major program area (e.g., adaptive team sports, aquatics access, wheelchair sports, unified/special olympics-style competition, sensory‑friendly programming). Skills in program planning, budgeting, scheduling, staff training, volunteer coordination, purchasing, and partnership development. Skills using recreation registration/reservation systems and Microsoft 365/Google Workspace. Ability to conduct participant assessments; develop accommodation plans; adapt rules/equipment; and train staff to implement and support consistently. Ability to communicate clearly and compassionately with participants, families, caregivers, partners, and co‑workers; resolve conflicts respectfully; and deliver excellent customer service. Ability to organize multiple programs simultaneously; analyze participation and financial data; and prepare accurate reports and recommendations. Ability to apply first aid/CPR and implement emergency action plans; uphold safety policies; and model professional conduct. Assist with broader departmental initiatives; other duties as assigned. Typical Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreation & Park Management, Kinesiology/Exercise Science, Special Education, Adaptive Physical Education, or a closely related field. Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in professional recreation, including two (2) years coordinating adaptive/inclusive programs and/or adaptive sports; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Supervisory experience (hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating) of staff and/or volunteers. Valid South Carolina driver’s license by hire date; acceptable driving record. CPR/AED and First Aid certification within 30 days of hire. Preferred/Desirable CTRS (Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist) or nationally recognized adaptive sports certification(s). CPRP (Certified Park and Recreation Professional). CPI/Handle With Care (de‑escalation) or equivalent behavior support training. Lifeguard or aquatic access certification (for aquatic programming). Experience with Special Olympics, Unified Sports, wheelchair/para sports, Miracle League, or similar organizations. Experience with registration/reservation software (e.g., ActiveNet, RecTrac) and scoreboard/timing systems. Grant writing/administration experience.
