OverviewOne of Australia’s leading research & teaching universities with vibrant campus life and a strong sense of community & inclusion.The Research Associate (Level A) will join the Biomedical AI Laboratory (led by Associate Professor Fatemeh Vafaee) and contribute to cutting‑edge research that positively impacts society.Job DetailsLocation: AustraliaLevel: ASalary: $113 K – $121 K plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loadingContract type: Fixed Term – 10 monthsHours: Part time (35 hours per week)Reports to: Associate Professor Fatemeh VafaeeNo direct reports.Specific ResponsibilitiesContribute independently or as a team member to collaborative research that enhances the quality of outcomes.Collaborate in multidisciplinary research at the intersection of biology, medicine, and computational science, coordinating research outcomes with stakeholders.Foster innovation by developing novel approaches and leading research initiatives, ensuring impactful results and advancements.Conduct research and support teams to create scholarly output recognized by peers.Undertake specific research projects under guidance and contribute to the development of research activities.Support the dissemination of research outcomes through appropriate channels.Perform discipline‑appropriate research activities, including literature reviews, data collection, development and validation of methodologies, analysis, and manuscript preparation.Participate in and/or present at conferences and workshops relevant to the project.Assist with the supervision of research students where required.Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure the health and safety of yourself and others.Key QualificationsPhD in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or related discipline, or equivalent research experience.Experience in analyzing and interpreting omics datasets with strong expertise in AI and machine learning methodologies.Proven ability to analyze single‑cell and multi‑omics data and understand underlying biological principles.Proficiency in implementing and optimizing modern AI models (e.g., BERT, GNN, VAE, GANs, GPT, LLMs).Hands‑on experience with NGS bioinformatics pipelines and analytical workflows.Commitment to staying up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.Ability to conduct high‑quality academic research independently with limited supervision.Track record of publications and conference presentations.Team‑working, collaborative, and relationship‑building skills across disciplines.Excellent interpersonal, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.Understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, and relevant policies and guidelines.Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to related training.Application ProcessPlease apply online.
