What The Role Is The Environmental Enforcement Officer plays a crucial role in maintaining public health, safety, and environmental standards by enforcing environmental laws and regulations. This position involves investigating environmental violations, issuing warnings, fines, or citations, and educating the public about environmental responsibilities. The officer will work closely with local authorities, businesses, and residents to promote compliance and help reduce environmental crimes such as littering, fly‑tipping, and pollution. Main Responsibilities Assist the Council in relation to the investigation of complaints made by members of the public. Daily liaison with the Council. Provide statistical data to the Council and deal with freedom of information requests. Leading from the front and issuing Fixed Penalty Notices whilst in your front‑line role. Monitor conduct and performance of the team. Ensure the smooth running of the team. Provide theory and front‑line training to new team members. Provide on‑the‑ground support as and when required. Documentation of processes across the enforcement teams. Keep up to date with legislations and relay this information to the team. Conduct officer appraisals. Compile initial prosecution file and liaise with Local Authority legal team. Any other reasonable task under Instruction of Operations Manager. Produce statistical reports on a daily, monthly and yearly basis. About You Experience in a similar leadership role is essential. Knowledge of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and Anti‑Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014 would be advantageous. The ability to communicate with offenders, often in demanding circumstances in a professional manner. Previous experience in a customer service role and handling difficult situations in a professional manner. Be happy working outdoors, on foot in all seasons carrying out foot patrols for prolonged periods of time. Professional in approach, with a balanced sense of judgement and be able to act with conscience and integrity. Have the ability to use your own initiative when carrying out your role, as well as being able to work within a team environment. Own transport. Environmental Law Enforcement Enforce environmental regulations and local by‑laws relating to littering, fly‑tipping, graffiti, waste management, noise pollution, and other environmental concerns. Patrol assigned areas to detect violations and ensure compliance with environmental laws. Investigate reports of environmental offences from the public and respond promptly to complaints. Issuing Fines And Notices Issue fixed penalty notices (FPNs) and citations to individuals or businesses for non‑compliance with environmental laws. Prepare and serve legal documents, including warning notices and fines, in accordance with local laws. Conduct follow‑up visits to ensure compliance with issued notices and take further action if necessary. Investigation And Reporting Investigate environmental offences such as illegal dumping, abandoned vehicles, and unlawful waste disposal by gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and preparing case files. Use surveillance equipment, including cameras, to monitor and collect evidence of environmental crimes. Report findings to senior management and collaborate with legal teams to pursue prosecutions when necessary. Court Proceedings And Legal Support Prepare case files for prosecution, including collecting evidence, photographs, and witness statements. Attend court proceedings and present evidence as required to support legal action against environmental offenders. Communication Express information clearly and concisely to ensure understanding. Flexibility Adapt to change and work effectively in various situations and weather conditions. Learning and Development Participate in our training course to gain insight into daily duties, current legislation, communication, and interaction aspects of the role, earning a recognised qualification in environmental awareness.
