Job Summary Applications are invited for the post of a less than full‑time locum Consultant to join the Department of Stroke Medicine at our Trust. If successful you will be joining an enthusiastic and experienced stroke specialist multidisciplinary team. Our Stroke Service admits approximately 800 patients with confirmed stroke each year. An out‑of‑hours thrombolysis service is provided in partnership with Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH). Depending on the skills of the successful candidate, an opportunity exists to take part in the acute medical on‑call. A high‑risk TIA service runs 5 days per week with dedicated same‑day carotid Doppler and MRI imaging to provide carotid endarterectomy within 48 hours as needed. At weekends the service is provided by NUH. Main duties of the job The overriding purpose is to support the provision of highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement; Provision with Consultant colleagues of a service, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department; Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences; Participate in service development and business planning; Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff; Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally; Participate in medical audit, the Trust's Clinical Governance processes and in CPD; Managerial, including budgetary responsibilities where appropriate. About Us Our inpatient services are based at King's Mill Hospital, offering superb facilities for both stroke inpatients and outpatient services. An integrated unit on Ward 53 and 54 is the hub for hyper‑acute, acute and rehabilitation stroke services. Four monitored beds comprise the hyper‑acute bay and the senior stroke nurses are all NIHSS certified and available 24/7 to admit patients directly from A&E as well as assessing potential thrombolysis patients. The remaining 31 beds on the stroke ward are for ongoing acute management and rehabilitation, which includes a therapy treatment area. There is a dedicated Integrated Community Stroke Service which provides intensive rehabilitation within the community. This is supported by physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, clinical physiology and nurse and rehabilitation support workers. On average 40% of the patients admitted to the stroke unit are discharged to the ICSS. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from date of interview or eligibility for specialist registration (CESR). The ability to work effectively as part of a multi‑disciplinary team is also essential. Person Specification Essential Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for specialist registration within six months of interview. Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or evidence of an equivalent qualification. Experience requisite to meet all aspects of the job plan. Understanding of all aspects of Stroke Medicine. Ability to maintain clinical credibility and authority with a multi‑professional team including senior trainees. Ability to communicate effectively with team members, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies. Commitment to Continuing Medical Education and the requirements of Clinical Governance and Audit. Ability to effectively organise and manage clinical workload. Desirable An appropriate higher degree. Five years supervised training in an appropriate SpR equivalent training programme. Stroke Fellowship. Demonstrable ability as a teacher with evidence of training for the role. Ability to convert research evidence into clinical practice. Publications in peer‑reviewed journals. Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels. The potential to be Head of Service in the future.
