Due to the imminent retirement of the current Head, an exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and highly motivated Clinical Scientist to lead our Radiotherapy Physics team. The successful candidate will be an experienced scientist working at consultant level with extensive experience Radiotherapy Treatment Planning and Physical Dosimetry Services, and competence to act as a Medical Physic Expert. They will have a strong interest in providing both scientific leadership and strategic workforce development for the radiotherapy team in a very rewarding senior position. The Radiotherapy Physics Team is a very dedicated multidisciplinary team including Engineers, Clinical Scientists, Dosimetrists and Allied Health Professionals. They work closely with the Clinical Radiotherapy Team and the Trust RPAs. The team are involved with all aspects of the equipment life cycle from supporting business cases/bids for innovative equipment, to commissioning it and oversight regular safe use. There is a strong commitment to training and to innovation, research and development. Interviews will take place between 26th November and 5th December. Responsibilities The postholder will lead the Radiotherapy Physics Section in the delivery of comprehensive highly specialist scientific and technical support services to the Clinical Radiotherapy Department. They will lead scientific and technical research and development in the field of radiotherapy physics, in support of the clinical priorities of the Radiotherapy Department. They will be responsible to provide scientific support services to external organisations under service level agreements. Details Date posted: 24 October 2025 Pay scheme: Agenda for change Band: Band 8d Salary: £99,808 to £113,803 a year per annum inc Contract: Permanent Working pattern: Full-time, Flexible working Reference number: 259-7573475SBH Job locations: St Bartholomew's Hospital, West Smithfield, London, EC1A 7BE Qualifications and Experience Essential Good (1st or 2nd class) Honours degree in a relevant subject Relevant MSc or higher degree PhD or equivalent experience in Radiotherapy Physics State Registered Clinical Scientist with HCPC Desirable HSTT or Equivalent Training Project Management-accredited training RPA 2000 Certificate of Competence to act as a Medical Physics Expert Fellowship of a Professional Society (e.g. IPEM) Experience Operational management of a scientific service to a substantial radiotherapy department Experience of leading a service part of an associated cancer network Experience as a physicist in charge of a scientific/technical service within a large complex organisation planning and implementing service developments Thorough understanding of risk management Project management experience Knowledge Comprehensive knowledge of clinical treatment planning, radiotherapy imaging and radiobiology applied to radiotherapy Detailed knowledge of national Cancer Plan and the impact on radiotherapy physics Comprehensive/substantial knowledge of Health & Safety, Ionising Radiation Regulations IT risk and security knowledge, ability to communicate and negotiate with IT professionals Skills Able to write software, design databases and spreadsheets Able to configure and operate complex treatment planning systems (equivalent to CAD) Strategic thinker and organiser with an ability to articulate a clear vision Able to communicate complex information across professional boundaries Able to present complex scientific information to large groups Able to motivate highly qualified professional staff Excellent Negotiation skills Teaching skills up to post doctoral level Proactive, reliable, conscientious Team worker with a flexible approach to working hours Enthusiastic, self-motivated with a positive attitude Good time management Professional appearance and manner (work involves patient and visitor contact) Competent and confident in the clinical environment Evidence of personal development, scientific innovation and original published work Additional information Disclosure and Barring Service Check: This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service.
