Principal Naval Architect – Expleo Group As a Principal Naval Architect at Expleo, you will work on concept surface and sub‑surface vessel design, complex engineering analysis, development of innovative tools and decarbonisation solutions across global maritime programmes. We offer a flexible hybrid arrangement with the primary location in one of our UK offices (Bristol, Derby, or Preston) and occasional client‑site travel. Responsibilities Apply and further develop a breadth of engineering skills in Naval Architecture and related disciplines. Define and conduct engineering analyses, technical studies, and R&D projects to deliver high‑quality solutions. Provide mentoring, guidance, and leadership to enable growth of Naval Architects. Investigate and solve complex technical problems in concept, basic and detailed design phases. Develop and maintain technical and administrative procedures, standards, processes, and guidelines. Assist in maintaining and improving quality standards of engineering, design, and production information. Interface directly with customers and clients, representing our teams and discussing engineering solutions. Qualifications Degree qualified in a relevant STEM discipline (e.g., Naval Architecture, Ship Science, Marine Technology) or equivalent experience. Professional member of a relevant engineering institution (e.g., RINA, IMarEST, IMechE, IET). Recognised as an Incorporated or Chartered Engineer by the UK Engineering Council (or ability to achieve within 12 months). Essential Skills Adaptability and a strong aptitude for learning, with enthusiasm and the right attitude. A readiness to grow and develop technical and behavioural competence at the cutting edge of the discipline. The drive to work collaboratively with natural curiosity and continuous improvement, challenging yourself and others to find new solutions. Desired Skills Understanding of a Naval Architect’s role throughout all stages of the design lifecycle. Knowledge of classification society rules, regulations, and standards in design, construction, and in‑service lifecycle phases. Experience Minimum of 4 years post‑graduate experience (8 years for non‑degree qualified) in commercial or naval maritime domains. Experience in at least one of the following technical knowledge areas: Hydrostatic, seakeeping & stability analysis. Propulsion, resistance, and powering requirements. Hydrodynamic & manoeuvring analysis. Marine structure design & analysis. Ship design (hull form, superstructure, arrangement & outfitting). Use of Naval Architecture design & analysis software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, MaxSurf, NAPA, Aveva, Paramarine, Orcaflex, Ansys, MatLab, MS Excel). Whole‑ship design, including performance assessment, design integration, construction, and through‑life maintenance. Working in multi‑company and engineering discipline teams with effective communication. Experience in a technical consulting environment, leading or supporting multiple engineering projects and customers. Naval projects may require initial security considerations (e.g., UK nationality and eligible for Security Check or Developed Vetting clearance).
