About the role We have an exciting opportunity for a Hydrographic Surveyor to join our fantastic Asset Improvement Team, playing a key role in surveying and managing the Trust's extensive network of canals, rivers, reservoirs, and docks across England and Wales.You'll be part of a small, skilled team responsible for collecting, processing, analysing, and presenting spatial information about the waterway environment – vital data that supports dredging, reservoir safety, and engineering projects.Working closely with the Senior Hydrographic Surveyor, you'll help plan and carry out multibeam and single beam echosounder surveys, process data using industry software, and ensure outputs are accurate and actionable for use across the organisation.This role is perfect for someone who enjoys hands‑on fieldwork, travelling, and working outdoors, while also contributing to essential environmental and engineering projects. Key responsibilities Mobilise and calibrate hydrographic survey equipment. Carry out hydrographic surveys to plan and quality standards. Process, analyse, and interpret survey data for use across the Trust. Maintain and service the team's survey boats and equipment. Support prioritisation of dredging and asset management works. Engage positively with customers and local communities while surveying. Respond to internal and external enquiries relating to waterway assets. Demonstrate and uphold Trust values around safety, diversity, and inclusion. About you You will be a motivated team player who enjoys varied work and travelling across the UK. Whether you're early in your career or an experienced surveyor seeking a new challenge, we'd love to hear from you.You'll need to be comfortable driving a 4x4 and towing a boat trailer, as all survey operations begin from Tinsley Marina, Sheffield, where our equipment and vessels are based. Don’t worry – full training will be provided on boat handling and survey operations. Essential qualifications and skills Degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline. Proven experience in hydrographic surveying. Experience in boat handling. Working knowledge of HYPACK (or equivalent) and GIS tools. Familiarity with GNSS, echosounders, and sound velocity probes. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Full UK driving licence (minimum 3 years). Desirable Working towards professional membership (e.g. AssocRICS, TCInstCES). Experience collaborating across technical and operational teams.
