Band 8a Specialist Clinical Pharmacist - Gastroenterology Closing date: 17 December 2025 We seek a Specialist Clinical Pharmacist to lead and develop our gastroenterology pharmacy service at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. You'll provide expert, specialised, clinical pharmacy care to the gastroenterology inpatient service, managing patients with inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal failure and complex GI surgery, optimising medicines use and improving patient outcomes. Key responsibilities include leading high‑cost drug management, developing clinical guidelines, supporting multidisciplinary teams, attending ward rounds, and delivering advanced pharmaceutical care. You'll line‑manage junior staff, contribute to service development, partake in governance and medicines management panels, and support education and research activities. Strong clinical knowledge, leadership skills, experience managing complex cases and costs, plus enthusiasm for advancing gastroenterology pharmacy are essential. A non‑medical prescribing qualification or willingness to obtain is preferred. Main duties of the job Deliver specialist clinical pharmacy service in gastroenterology inpatients and outpatients. Lead medicine optimisation for complex therapies including biologics, immunomodulators, parenteral nutrition. Develop, implement, and review clinical guidelines and protocols. Manage drug expenditure and support commissioning processes. Supervise and develop junior pharmacy staff and technicians. Contribute to rotas, governance, medicines safety and quality improvement. Lead education, training and support research projects. Maintain professional standards and compliance with Trust policies. Qualifications MPharm degree or equivalent Clinical diploma (or equivalent) or higher Pharmacy degree Qualified as an independent non‑medical prescriber or a willingness to undertake the programme GPhC registration Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Experience Substantial experience as a band 7 pharmacist (or above) within hospital pharmacy Experience in a range of clinical specialties Previous participation in multi‑disciplinary team Experience in supervising and managing pharmacists and pharmacy technicians and performing appraisals Experience of audit work Excellent knowledge of general clinical pharmacy and drug use Networking: being able to work within and without the Trust with credibility Knowledge of current national standards, guidelines in gastroenterology issues relevant to education & training In‑depth knowledge of Continuing Professional Development process and of Plan & Record system Experience of supervision, developing and appraising staff as well as giving feedback Experience of tutoring pharmacists studying for postgraduate qualification Previous experience of teaching other healthcare professionals Experience of short‑listing and interviewing Experience of managing drug expenditure for a specialty and understanding of budgetary mechanism Experience of working at a strategic level with senior clinicians and managers and experience of working in an integrated directorate Experience as a trainer Disclosure and Barring Service Check This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions. #J-18808-Ljbffr
