Join our friendly and professional team at University Hospital Lewisham (UHL), Lewisham. An exciting opportunity has arisen within the NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership (ESEL) Cellular Pathology Department. We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Biomedical Scientist with strong organisational and leadership skills and a commitment to meeting the needs of our patients to support our busy histopathology team. The successful candidate will be primarily based at University Hospital Lewisham but may be expected to cover and support other ESEL sites depending on service demand. You will be responsible for the day‑to‑day management of the laboratory sections, quality management, and will take direction from Supporting Operational Leads in transforming the delivery of services. Applicants should have completed a relevant MSc or IBMS Special Examination (Fellowship) and be interested in opportunities for progression and development within our organisation. Previous candidates need not apply Key Responsibilities Take operational responsibility for a laboratory section as required. Collaborate in the development and evaluation of new equipment, protocols, and testing procedures; lead the development and production of revised or new standard operating procedures. Assume a special function within the department as agreed with line management, including training officer and/or quality officer responsibilities. Ensure internal quality control and external quality assurance programmes are implemented and maintained for relevant sections; interpret and act on results and communicate information to relevant staff. Assist in ensuring the laboratory meets Quality Management accreditation standards. Participate in the validation, verification, and SLA initiation of equipment used. Implement and maintain a document control system for the Department of Histology in partnership with the Quality Manager. Provide training to staff and support educational and development programmes. Qualifications and Training (Essential) State registration with the Human Pathology Committee (HPC). MSc in Biomedical Science or an equivalent qualification from an approved institution. Experience (Essential) Minimum of 3 years post–state registration laboratory experience in a relevant discipline. Experience organising in‑house educational, training and tutorial sessions and encouraging staff attendance. Experience ensuring departmental training complies with current and future professional, Trust and national standards. Experience producing and maintaining a current training programme in partnership with training officers and the laboratory service manager. Working knowledge of IT systems such as e‑mail, word processing, spreadsheets, databases and the Internet. Experience (Desirable) Assisting in the establishment and maintenance of a Quality Management System. Assisting in ensuring an ethos of Total Quality Management within the department of histology. Assisting in ensuring the laboratory meets Quality Management accreditation standards. Performing regular audits in cellular pathology. Knowledge and Skills (Essential) Good written and verbal communication skills. Good interpersonal skills. Ability to work both within a team and unsupervised. Able to communicate and empathise with patients and other members of the public. Able to communicate with other health professionals. Tactful and discrete. Some appreciation of the NHS/healthcare system. Knowledge and Skills (Desirable) Ability to participate in performing validation, verification and SLA initiation of equipment used. Personal Qualities (Essential) Ability to work under pressure and achieve deadlines and targets. Self‑motivated. Able to show initiative. Courteous. Ability to participate in educational and developmental programmes as set by the university and the department. Personal Qualities (Desirable) Willingness to undertake management training.
