Head of Spanish £36,767 - £53,995 plus TLR and generous benefits package Outstanding Secondary School in Hillingdon Position opening: January 2026 Overview The MFL department provides a dynamic, innovative and supportive environment where engaging and varied lessons enable students to realise their potential. Students use language with confidence and enjoy learning about other cultures. There are currently five full‑time members, one part‑time member, and many staff also teach in other subject areas or hold senior leadership positions within the school. Students study Spanish and French in Years 7‑9. From Year 10 onward, 75% of each cohort studies a language to GCSE, with most continuing Spanish and French. Good numbers opt to pursue French and Spanish at A‑level, reflecting the talent exhibited within the school around learning languages. Key Responsibilities Ensure high standards of teaching and learning for all students throughout the department. Develop a curriculum vision and plan. Create Schemes of Learning to enable all students to become effective lifelong learners. Produce a strategic three‑year plan to deliver the faculty vision, supported by an annual action plan. Complete an annual self‑review of the department in support of the Faculty SEF, analysing student academic performance and using conclusions to modify the strategic plan. Contribute to discussions on course selection and implementation. Collaborate effectively with partner primary schools to ensure a smooth transition for new students. Monitor and evaluate the quality of learning – planning, lesson delivery, teacher feedback, assessment, differentiation and classroom management. Communicate a clear department vision encouraging ownership, team spirit and commitment among faculty members. Line‑manage and provide professional development for staff to help them perform at their best. Meet regularly with the line manager and keep them informed of departmental developments. Provide active care for student well‑being. Contribute to assemblies in a way that supports the Academy ethos. Maintain the highest standards of student behaviour enabling effective learning. Ensure productive communication with parents, keeping them well informed about progress, achievements and any incidents of poor behaviour. Devise and implement departmental student assessment systems to identify and act on under‑achievement early. Coordinate effective intervention strategies that support students in meeting expected progress. Identify excellent practice within the department and coordinate its sharing through a planned timetable of observations, collaborative planning and team teaching.
