Job DetailsJob title: Instrumental, Control & Automation TechnicianRef: 37270Division: Asset Operations & Capital DeliveryLocation: Swindon - SN2 2DJContract type: PermanentHours: 38 per week (Mon‑Fri 7:30‑15:36) plus standby rotaSalary: up to £47,000 per annum (depending on experience)Closing date: 08/12/2025What you’ll be doingInstall, commission, maintain, and repair water production assets, including level instrumentation, flow meters, and turbidity monitors.Work with SCADA systems, PLCs, and process control networks.Liaise with and supervise contractors and suppliers where necessary.Investigate asset failures and implement repairs swiftly to avoid interruptions to the water supply.Provide specialist technical advice and train technical apprentices.Base location and travelSwindon – SN2 2DJ. You will be expected to travel to other surrounding sites.Essential criteriaHNC level or NVQ level 3 (or equivalent) in instrumentation, control, or automation.BS7671 (BS 7671:18 Edition) qualification.Practical understanding of operational plant and control systems.Knowledge of Wonderware and ClearSCADA (desirable).Experience with relay logic and PLCs (Rockwell & Allen‑Bradley) including management and programming.Ability to read and fault‑find from circuit diagrams and previous experience with inverter drives.Experience in calibration and maintenance of front‑line instrumentation.Problem‑solving skills and the ability to identify potential issues and implement solutions or escalations.Excellent communicator with technical expertise for internal, external staff, and contractors.Resilient, adaptable to pressures and a constantly changing environment.Minimum supervision – work independently to design and standards.Awareness of health and safety issues relevant to the industry.Team player who supports development of others.Full UK driving licence.BenefitsCompetitive salary up to £47,000 per annum, depending on skills and experience.Defined Contribution pension – 12% employee contribution, employer contributes 2X.Annual leave: 24 days per year, increasing to 28 with length of service (plus bank holidays).Performance‑related pay plan linked to company performance measures.Generous pension scheme through AON.Generous paternity leave – 4 weeks paid and optional 2 weeks unpaid.Enhanced maternity leave – 26 weeks full pay and 13 weeks half pay.Access to many benefits: annual health MOTs, physiotherapy and counselling, Cycle‑to‑Work, shopping vouchers, life assurance, and more.About Thames WaterThames Water is the UK’s largest water and wastewater company, with more than 16 million customers relying on us every day to supply water.
