THE GIG

The IP Legal team has a simple mission: Stop copiers and protect innovation for Dr. Martens.

The IP team is split into two key parts: brand and disputes. With this role supporting our Disputes division, it will report to the Head of IP – Disputes and partner with two IP Counsels in relation to a variety of global IP disputes and to support the brand protection team.

As our IP Paralegal you will be responsible for:

  • Updating and using our case management system.
  • Using and reviewing in house technology to spot lookalikes and carrying out manual searches of online retailers.
  • Understanding the agreements we have in place to stop lookalikes and policing those agreements.
  • Weekly meetings with IP Counsel over lookalikes and agreeing next steps.
  • Discussing lookalikes with external IP counsel and sending out notice of breach where a settlement agreement has been breached.
  • Responsible for seasonal (manual) sweep campaign of key retailers and feeding back results/trends to IP team and various stakeholders in the business.
  • Working with IP Counsel to record our rights with Customs and working with customs globally (via agents) to reduce counterfeits.
  • Evidence gathering for litigation and trade mark registrations and assisting IP counsel generally as required, inclusive of Legal research on points of law.
  • Maintenance of infringing shoe database and coordinating access to physical storage of infringing shoes.
THE STUFF THAT SETS YOU APART

Put simply, for this role the key things we're looking for are:

  • An understanding of IP law and previous IP paralegal work is essential.
  • Previous IP experience across litigation support, contract review, legal analysis notes and working with a digital case management system.
  • You will be used to digital aspects of brand protection - online watch and takedown.
  • Curiosity - Get under the skin of the Dr. Martens brand and help us to protect it.
  • Organisation and consistency - Keep up to date records of all active cases and matters so we know what cases we have where.
  • Attention to detail - Be a single point of truth for every ongoing legal case so the data is correct and up to date.
  • Team mindset – you will work in a team and everything you do will help the team's goals.
  • A wish to help others - Work with the IP Legal team to get data out of the system to help us make better decisions on cases and help us keep the rest of Dr. Martens informed.
