Department Student Services Location Birmingham, England Salary £38,050 to £44,131per annum Permanent Post Type Full Time Release Date 03 December 2025 Closing Date 23.59 hours GMT on Wednesday 17 December 2025 Interview Date Tuesday 06 January 2026 Reference S125021 We are looking for a Wellbeing Adviser to join the Mental Health and Wellbeing Team at BCU. The person joining the team will have a role in the providing direct wellbeing advice to students and will report to the existing Senior Wellbeing Adviser. They will be joining a wider team that support students with wellbeing and mental health advice, counselling and CBT. The Wellbeing Advisor will assist the Senior Wellbeing Adviser, Head of Mental Health and Wellbeing and wider Mental Health and Wellbeing Team in the provision and development of advice, referral and practical support for students with health and wellbeing concerns. The key responsibilities of the role will include: Provide individual students with direct support, information and practical advice in relation to general wellbeing issues. Play a role in the University’s response to unpredictable situations and wellbeing related crises, such as student death or incidents of infectious disease within the student population. Provide support for students and University staff who are affected by times of crisis, advising and supporting staff in their roles in relation to student wellbeing. Assist the Head of Mental Health and Wellbeing Operations in co-ordinating the University’s approach to care leavers, developing and implementing systems to help University and Faculty admissions staff identify applicants leaving care, and raising awareness amongst relevant staff about the needs of care leavers. Undertake a primary assessment of needs and provide information, advice and support during the enquiry, application, induction and transition stages for young people leaving care. Develop information and self-help literature for students and staff on general wellbeing issues in liaison with other professionals within Student Governance, Mental Health and Wellbeing. Promote health and emotional wellbeing across the University, contribute to strategic wellbeing initiatives, events and campaigns, and prepare and deliver training and awareness workshops for staff to improve the University’s response to student health and wellbeing incidents. The key requirements are as follows: Educated to degree level or equivalent; Counselling skills/listening skills are essential; An understanding of the range of health and wellbeing issues (including mental health) which may affect students in Higher Education is required; RN / RMN, social work, other physical or other health-related professional qualification is desirable; Proven experience of working within a voluntary, community or statutory health related environment preferably with young people; Experience of working in a Higher Education setting, or with students or young people is preferred; Experience of providing direct support to individuals with health and wellbeing needs, including mental health difficulties/physical health difficulties; Contribution to awareness-raising initiatives, facilitation of workshops / training in wellbeing issues (or a willingness to do this) is desirable; Development of mental health and / or wellbeing-related policies, procedures or protocols is desirable; Experience in crisis management, and equality of opportunity is preferred; Sound knowledge of statutory and voluntary health provision and referral routes Knowledge of Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000 or other relevant policies and publications regarding care leavers is desirable; Understanding of confidentiality and Data Protection issues in Higher Education is preferred; Knowledge and understanding of equality and diversity issues and how this relates to students is preferred; Birmingham City University is a large and diverse place to study.
