You will be required to assist in the delivery of the day operation at Aberystwyth University by providing a porter and cleaning service under the direction of the Manager. The work will be sited at Penglais campus although the successful candidates will be expected to work from any of the universities sites in Aberystwyth. What you’ll do This job description is subject to review and amendment in the light of the changing needs of the University, to provide appropriate development opportunities and/or the addition of any other reasonable duties. Main Duties & Responsibilities Respond to intruder and fire alarm activations, telemetry, and other alarm systems. To comply with relevant legislative and regulatory requirements, including but not limited to; COSHH. Manual Handling. Health and Safety. Data Protection. Equal Opportunities Legislation. Respond to emergencies and incidents with supervision and assistance from either or all the following: Facilities Team Leader. Facilities Duty Manager. Facilities Management. Emergency Services. Prevent and detect fire in university buildings to include investigating alarm activations. Record clearly and accurately all fire alarm activations and undertake weekly fire alarm tests. Prevent and detect any damage to University Buildings. Prevent and detect intruders or instances of theft. Car Park duties during Open and Visiting days, conference events and as required. Produce clear and accurate records of incidents, accidents and near misses, breeches of compliance, outstanding maintenance items etc. Portering duties – from setting up meeting rooms to moving heavy items e.g. furniture and support the delivery of refreshments for conferences. Carry out litter picking and assist with adverse weather plan for external surroundings of the buildings. Clean designated areas to include communal, office and toilet areas, laboratories. Deal with refuse removal to maintain a clean and safe environment. Undertake minor maintenance and reporting all other maintenance problems to include, but not limited to replacing defective lamps and tubes. Undertake all training courses as necessary to carry out duties, which may include but not limited to Manual Handling and complying with COSHH regulations. Reporting faulty or damaged equipment and potential hazards to the Supervisor or Manager. Attend team meetings. Adhere to the work-wear code. The post holder may on occasions be required to drive a Company vehicle. You will be required to work within all of Aberystwyth University premises. Willingness to cover for annual leave and sickness absence. Basic IT skills would be desirable for this position, to allow the post-holder the ability to navigate the University website and e-mail. To undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post. Who you are – Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge and Skills required Essential Full valid UK driving licence, or equivalent right to drive in the UK. Knowledge of cleaning operations. Excellent face to face, telephone and written communication skills in order to receive, understand and convey straightforward information to staff, students, guests, members of the public, maintenance operatives and the emergency services. Excellent Customer Service Skills. The ability to be flexible and work unsupervised. The ability to work in an organised manner. Willingness to continuously learn about the requirements of the University and especially Campus Services customers. Willingness to learn basic IT skills. Actively participate with management and other team members to promote a positive image of yourself and Aberystwyth University. The ability to work effectively as part of a team. The ability to work unsupervised at times. To be self-motivated. This position is physically demanding and involves lifting and carrying, occasionally up and down stairs, moving furniture, lifting bed linen and carrying cleaning products and equipment therefore it is essential that the successful applicant has the capability to perform these tasks on day-to-day basis. The ability to operate at Level A2 or evidence to demonstrate an on-going commitment to learn Welsh to this level. Desirable First Aid Training. Manual Handling Training. COSHH training. Customer service qualification. Previous experience of cleaning operations and techniques for large buildings, including the effective use of cleaning equipment and an awareness of the colour coding systems for cleaning equipment and materials to be used for different areas. Experience of working within the Higher Education Sector. Maintenance Skills Basic IT skills with the ability to use the Internet and e-mail. It would be highly desirable if post-holder had a recognised competence in IT skills (ECDL / ICDL) or had equivalent experience.
