Facial tattoos are generally not acceptable, except where they are for cultural, religious, or medical reasons.For high‑security (category A) prisons, you must have been a resident in the UK for the last three years.Recruitment ProcessYou will be invited to complete Stage 1 of the online test to assess basic judgement and numerical skills. If you pass, you will be invited to complete Stage 2, a task‑based assessment. After passing the online tests, you will be invited to an online assessment centre (OAC). Upon successful completion of the OAC and allocation to a vacancy, you will be asked to undertake a medical and fitness test covering eyesight, hearing, and basic health screening, including a blood‑pressure check.Pay and Working HoursThe initial training is 37 hours a week. After training, you may choose to work 37, 39, or 41 hours a week. Your annual salary will reflect your weekly hours:37 hours a week = £37,246 a year39 hours a week = £39,375 a year41 hours a week = £41,503 a yearBenefits25 days' annual holiday (rising to 30 days after 10 years' service)Paid time off for public holidays and 1 extra privilege dayCivil Service pension with employer contributions of 28.97%Cycle‑to‑work scheme, travel loans and other benefitsJob Offers and Merit ListThis is a merit vacancy. If you are successful at the OAC, you will be added to a merit list based on your score. When all applicants have completed the assessment centre, positions will be offered to individuals with the highest scores first as vacancies become available. The merit list is valid for 12 months; after that you will need to re‑apply.Operational Support Grade RoleFollowing attendance at your OAC, if you are unsuccessful in your application to become a prison officer, we may offer you an alternative role as an Operational Support Grade (OSG) officer.
