SouthendonSea, United Kingdom Society for the Advancement of Management Studies Full time

Workshop part sponsored by SAMSKnowledge network: An interdisciplinary paper development workshopA Paper Development Workshop for Early-Career ScholarsThe broad area of social network theory and analysis is interdisciplinary in nature as it has historically attracted scholars from diverse backgrounds (sociology, statistics, management, economics). The specific knowledge networks topic has attracted high interest in the last two decades. The growing interest is due to the opportunity to analyse different phenomena through the lens of network. Social actors are embedded in a network of relationship which provide access to information, knowledge and resources. Exploiting and analysing this network of relations can shed light of several aspects relevant for researchers active in different domains. A knowledge network can be considered at a micro level i.e. a firm’s internal network of individual relationship and at a macro level i.e. a network of collaboration among firms aiming to develop innovative knowledge and products. For this reason, knowledge networks are relevant for scholars working in the area of strategic management (networks of alliances among firms), innovation (network of scientists and R&D collaborations), international business (transnational network of multinationals), human resource management (individual network of relationship exploited for career purposes), bibliometricians (network of scientific documents), economists (trade networks). The purpose of the PDW is twofold. First it will bring together scholars active in the fields of management, international business and innovation to stimulate and cultivate an interdisciplinary and cross-fertilised discussion on the management and of national and international knowledge network and its theoretical and managerial implications.Second, the PDW will provide PhD students and early career researchers with advice about managing their academic career, writing and positioning their papers, understanding the review process. More specifically, the PDW will provide applicants with developmental feedback on their manuscripts that are at both at an early or relatively advanced stage of development, and encourage them to further develop quality research papers on issues that are of relevance to the international business and management community. The workshop will be led by academics based at Essex University along with other established scholars from the BAM International Business/International Management Special Interest Group and academics active in the area of knowledge networks. The workshop will include presentations by senior scholars on publishing strategies and techniques, followed by in-depth feedback on selected papers. The call will be open to literature review, empirical, quantitative and qualitative papers and theoretical work. The workshop will include:Presentations from scholars active in the areas of management, strategy, innovation and international business and economics;Presentation of papers submitted to the workshop by PhD students and early Career Researchers;Roundtable discussion aiming at providing authors with feedback on the manuscript and on the presentation. Applicants will receive practical and developmental feedback aiming at strengthening their papers.Workshop DetailsThe workshop will be hosted at the Essex Business School (Southend Campus) on October 8th and 9th, 2019. The workshop is sponsored by the Society for the Advancement of Management Studies (SAMS), and the British Academy of Management Special Interest Group in International Business. The target group for this workshop is early-career researchers that can be PhD students or post-docs.Gautam Ahuja (Eleanora and George Landew Professor of Management, Cornell University)Suma Athreye, (Prof. of Innovation and International Business, University of Essex)Antonio Capaldo (Professor of Strategic Management at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart)Robin Cowen (Professor of the Economics of Technical Change at the University of Maastricht)Mehmet Demirbag (Prof. of International Business, University of Essex)Claudia Girardone (Prof. of Finance, University of Essex)Mariana Marra (Lecturer in Management Science, University of Essex)Emmanuella Plakoyiannaki (Prof. International Business, University of Leeds)Nikolaos Papgeorgiadis (Senior Lecturer in International Business, University of Liverpool)Vania Sena (Prof. of Economics, University of Essex)Haina Zhang (Senior Lecturer in International Business, University of Lancaster)Paper Selection CriteriaTo ensure the quality of the workshop and an intimate and stimulating environment, we will accept no more than 20 papers.
