Consultant or Speciality Doctor – Perinatal Psychiatry Join to apply for the Consultant or Speciality Doctor in Perinatal Psychiatry role at Northamptonshire Healthcare Foundation Trust. Northamptonshire Healthcare Foundation Trust is rated outstanding by the Care Quality Commission and is delighted to advertise a new 10‑post Consultant Psychiatry or Speciality Doctor position in Perinatal Psychiatry, funded as part of the Long Term Plan ambitions for Perinatal Mental Health. The post can be based at Campbell House in Northampton or at alternative venues within the county and offers a hybrid working arrangement, including both video and face‑to‑face appointments. The service provides county‑wide provision across Northamptonshire. Duties Provide medical leadership alongside existing Perinatal Consultant Psychiatrists. Undertake specialist assessment, diagnosis and treatment of women in the perinatal period from preconception to one year postnatal, with follow‑up to two years where there is an identified need. Provide specialist advice to GPs, Consultant Obstetricians and Adult Mental Health clinicians on the use of psychotropic medication during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Offer specialist input into risk assessment, care planning and crisis planning for women with pre‑existing mental health needs, new‑onset severe mental health conditions or those identified as at risk postpartum. Conduct urgent assessments of women presenting with symptoms of postpartum psychosis. Provide clinical input into the development of policies, procedures and clinical guidelines to support the service and the wider perinatal mental health pathway. Lead local health community initiatives, raising awareness, knowledge and skills through training, information and up‑to‑date evidence‑based guidance. Commit to clinical excellence and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team; travel to all Trust locations is required. We have developed a comprehensive induction programme to meet the Perinatal Competency Framework, and regular supervision and training are provided to all staff. Further training opportunities are available through local and regional programmes, and links exist with the East Midlands Regional Perinatal Network. The post holder is expected to contribute to a locally agreed programme that delivers training to health and social care professionals in Northamptonshire. The Trust has adapted to new ways of working during COVID‑19, employing remote consultations for direct clinical work, supervision and MDT meetings. Opportunities exist to participate in clinical research, with access to Trust research fellows and collaboration with universities such as the Open University, Nottingham, Oxford and Northampton. Northamptonshire offers varied countryside, excellent transport links to London and other cities, attractive housing, and good schools – an appealing setting for family living.
