North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust Consultant in Paediatrics The closing date is 16 December 2025 We are seeking General Paediatric Consultants interested in working with the current team to further develop and extend our Integrated Children's Care model within North Cumbria. We are looking for applicants who are dynamic and forward‑thinking, who are interested in the full scope of practice of a General Paediatrician and who want to work within a role that encompasses close ties with Primary Care, Community and Hospital Paediatrics and who want to live and work in a beautiful part of Britain. We strongly support the development and maintenance of Specialist Interests within Paediatrics with provision of outpatient services across both sites and the maintenance and development of shared‑care for Children with Complex Health Needs with tertiary colleagues in Newcastle and other centres where this is best for the Child and family. Candidates with areas of special interest that complements the existing departmental clinical provision will be considered. We would equally welcome applications from either experienced or newly trained Consultants. We are a developing and expanding team. The post holder will be primarily based at the West Cumberland Hospital but may undertake some acute and outpatient duties across the Trust sites on a rotational basis at both the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle (CIC) and West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven (WCH). Main duties of the job The post will be flexibly time‑tabled to meet the demands of the service and the timing of sessions will change as the service develops. The post‑holder will be site‑based at Whitehaven. The Job Plan typically includes an average of 2 or 3 clinics per week, rapid access clinics on a rotational basis, and Consultant of the week cover (1 week in 6). Proposed initial job plans for each site are outlined in Appendix 1 and will be agreed on commencement of appointment. Rotas Full Tier 3 rota with non‑resident on‑calls at Consultant level. Consultant is expected to lead morning ward rounds on working days and during weekends when on‑call. The Paediatric Service is committed to ensuring safe and effective acute services for children while maintaining the work‑life balance of its Medical Staff. Person specification Education and qualifications MRCPCH or equivalent Full GMC registration Inclusion on the Specialist Registrar in Paediatrics (or within six months of inclusion on the GMC specialist register) Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT or CESR) or within six months of award of CCT/CESR or equivalent by interview Experience and knowledge High standard of clinical skill and expertise in clinical paediatrics Clinical governance Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of clinical paediatric problems both emergency and elective and in primary care Ability to take full and independent responsibility for liaising with clinical staff for the clinical care of patients UK experience Special interest to complement the existing clinical provision in the department Administrative and management Participation in on‑call and emergency cover Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of Child Health service Teaching Experience of and commitment to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff Ability to teach clinical and personal skills required for Child Health Research audit & governance Experience of and commitment to medical audit Communication skills and abilities Empathetic and sensitive approach to patient needs Approachable and effective multi‑disciplinary team member with excellent interpersonal skills Team loyalty Positive approach to lessons learnt Confident approach Personal attributes Effectively plan and prioritise own workload with an ability to complete mundane tasks, e.g. read numerous e‑mails and remember and store them effectively for future use when needed Cope with conflict or crisis in a calm manner and demonstrate emotional stability through a controlled temperament with a willingness to face difficult issues and acknowledge poor behaviour in self and others Be willing to try new activities or approaches to ensure a proactive and open‑minded method of change in the working environment Disclosure and Barring Service Check This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and requires a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
