Job SummaryA successful post created in advance of our move to Oriel, a new centre for Eye Health, due to open in 2027.On rotation to work across all areas of the Tissue Centre, to assist with the daily running of the Pathology Service, the Moorfields Lions Eye Bank and Department of Eye Pathology. This post spans a majority technical, clinical and some administrative roles within these services.In preparation for that move we are starting to bring the workforce together with roles such as this which have elements which cover all areas on a rotational basis, subject to planned need. Full comprehensive training shall be provided. The department seeks dynamic individuals with a "can-do" attitude, positive outlook, require minimal supervision and possess the appetite to seek continuous improvement with excellent outcomes.Main DutiesPathology Services DepartmentReceive and dispatch samples from across the Trust to the relevant pathology provider(s).Handle samples and field calls/queries from clinical teams relating to the results.Moorfields Lions Eye BankOrder and receive transplantable tissues and materials from multiple suppliers, before sending them to theatres and network sites for use in patients.Check theatre lists to ensure tissues are ordered in good time and meet acceptance criteria on receipt.Distribute correct tissue to the correct recipient while maintaining a custody trail.Source and order tissues from multiple providers (NHSBT, MiS, RMLEB, NuVision and Wescott Medical) to maintain relevant stocks locally.Perform appropriate checks on receipt of tissues and ensure suitability and storage conditions.Ensure tissue usage paperwork is completed for each issued tissue and chase gaps.Review and generate reports for providers such as HTA, IPC and GOC.Department of Eye PathologyReceive samples and biopsies from national senders and handle them per local guidelines.Carefully check request forms and patient samples while booking them into the department's computer system/database.Support Biomedical Scientists by undertaking duties such as changing processing machines, refreshing reagents, running IQC and retrieving solvents.Maintain up‑to‑date competencies and SOPs.Perform filing, administrative and secretarial duties: email, mail, calls, correspondence, supplies, audio typing, packages, file management, scanning and contacts database.Enter pathology specimen details into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).Transcribe histopathology reports into LIMS and distribute authorised reports to service users.Generate LIMS reports on clinical relevance (turnaround times, diagnosis lists, monthly NHS returns, Cancer Registry).Provide telephone liaison for hospitals and others regarding pathology results and tissue possession.Liaise with external parties about cases/charges for private and extracontractual work.Assist staff in prioritising cases to be reported, identifying outstanding cases.Liaise with external Trusts and laboratories over case dispatch and receipt for diagnosis in the UK and abroad.Assist administratively in meetings of the Department: take minutes when required.Organise internal diagnostic audit and facilitate audits for the wider Trust.Act as a central point of contact for the Department.Circulate all‑staff emails on behalf of the Department.Other Administrative TasksUse all relevant systems, including OpenEyes, PAS, EyePath, Eye Bank and Pathology databases to ensure data quality.Upload abnormal results to OpenEyes and notify requesting clinicians.Handle complex and sensitive information per SOPs and ensure abnormal blood results are acted upon.Comply with SOPs for safe and secure confidential processing, storage and disposal of patient and laboratory information per UKAS (ISO15189:2022) and Human Tissue Authority standards.About UsAt Moorfields, we provide more than just an excellent career and great colleagues to work with.
