The Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia is among the largest scientific research centres in sub-Saharan Africa, recognised globally for pioneering studies on some of the main causes of illness and death in tropical regions. We aim to improve health outcomes in developing countries through excellence in research, healthcare, and training. Our research programme includes basic scientific investigations, clinical trials, epidemiological studies, intervention research, and translational work. It benefits from exceptional research and clinical facilities and attracts international funding. The postholder will join an interdisciplinary team working on the CHARTER project – catalysing climate change action research for maternal and perinatal health in West Africa: towards evidence-based policy and practice. The role is based in The Gambia, with collaborators in Senegal, Kenya, and the UK. The successful applicant must hold a medical degree and a postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline, along with experience in leading innovative health research from start to finish. This includes expertise in environmental epidemiology, policy analysis, and public engagement. They should demonstrate a proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively and be capable of managing field staff. Some experience in contributing to research grant applications and working in West Africa is desirable. The post is full-time 35 hours per-week, 1FTE and fixed-term until 31 December 2027. The post is funded by the MRC Unit The Gambia and is available immediately. The salary will be on theLSHTM salary scale, Grade 6in the range £45,728-£51,872 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff.
