Locum Consultant in Metabolic Medicine

Job Summary Locum Consultant in Paediatric Metabolic Medicine – Brain. 12‑month fixed‑term contract, 9.5 PAs. This is a locum 9.5 PA consultant post (cover for career break) to support the clinical and research work of the Metabolic department. The post holder will be part of the Metabolic department, in the Brain Directorate. The on‑call commitment is 1 in 7 weekday attending basis and 1 in 7 weeknight on‑call commitment (including weekends). The Paediatric Metabolic Medicine Service is a tertiary referral unit providing emergency and elective management across the North Thames region (and from all over the South of England). Additional outreach clinics are in Belfast and Royal Berkshire Hospital. The Service also provides a national and international resource for the management of rare or complex paediatric metabolic conditions. Approximately 300 inpatient, 700 day cases and 4000 outpatient events occur per annum. The Service is designated as a Highly Specialised Service provider by NHS England for the care of children with Lysosomal Storage disorders. Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children is a renowned tertiary centre which provides world‑class care to infants, children and young people with rare, complex and difficult‑to‑treat conditions as well as acute, life‑threatening illness, many of which are treated on the largest critical intensive care units in the UK. Main Duties of the Job A 1 in 7 weekday attending and 1 in 7 weeknight on‑call commitment. This is a non‑resident post. The postholder is responsible, together with the other consultants in Metabolic Medicine, for the supervision of the day‑to‑day management of Metabolic Medicine in‑patients. During attending weeks the consultant will, with the Clinical Nurse Specialists and Dietetics Team, coordinate the management of new patients detected from newborn screening (e.g. PKU and MCADD), deal with emergency referrals and e‑mail and telephone communication/consultation. The postholder will be expected to undertake up to two outpatient clinics per week and, based on departmental needs, may need to cover outreach clinics in Belfast and the MDT clinic for Inherited White Matter Disorders. Additionally, the postholder will support the multidisciplinary clinics in rotation with the other consultants. All consultants are expected to maintain their general metabolic skills, and are encouraged to develop and be supported in their own sub‑speciality interest. Ward work will include overseeing inpatient care on the Metabolic ward and the clinical research facility. A number of patients in the metabolic service (particularly the Lysosomal Storage Disease (LSD) service) require BMT.
