Job Summary The role requires manufacturing high‑precision components for experimental equipment using CNC and manual machine tools. You will also fit and assemble components, sub‑assemblies, and complete instruments, ensuring all work meets required standards of accuracy and finish. The ability to accurately interpret engineering drawings, identify inconsistencies, and liaise effectively with academic, research, and design engineers is essential. Safe and efficient operation of CNC and conventional workshop machinery is a key part of the role, as will be the development and maintenance of experimental systems. Problem solving and working independently are essential, as is providing constructive support when required. Occasionally, you may assist with the installation, modification, or maintenance of research apparatus at UK or overseas sites. Responsibilities Manufacture high‑precision components for experimental equipment using CNC and manual machine tools. Fit and assemble components, sub‑assemblies, and complete instruments. Interpret engineering drawings accurately and identify inconsistencies. Operate CNC and conventional workshop machinery safely and efficiently. Support the development and maintenance of experimental systems. Assist with installation, modification, or maintenance of research apparatus at UK or overseas sites, when required. Qualifications Preferably completed a recognised apprenticeship and hold a BTEC Higher National Certificate/Diploma in Mechanical or Production Engineering or an equivalent qualification. Lower qualifications may be considered if offset by significantly greater experience. Previous experience in high‑technology and scientific research is an advantage. Experience manufacturing components using CNC and standard machines. Knowledge of Heidenhain systems and CAD/CAM experience is desirable but not essential. Experience with carbon fibre or composite materials, including lay‑up, laminating, trimming, or finishing, is highly advantageous.
