Clinical Research Fellow - Trust Doctor in Medicine The closing date is 01 December 2025 This 6-month clinical fellow post is an exciting opportunity to join the clinical team at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, UCLH and make a key contribution to the establishment of a flagship returning traveller biobank. You will work with the clinical, research and data informatics teams to develop the resources and gain the necessary permissions to establish a biobank. You will also support in the extraction and analysis of clinical data from the electronic patient record from patients who have attended the emergency tropical walk in service. You will have opportunities to conduct research projects that demonstrate the utility of this resource. Main duties of the job You will be based in the UCLH infectious diseases department, with access to the extensive programme of medical education available for our resident doctors. Most of your time will be spent developing the resources, establishing the framework and gaining the permissions necessary to establish a returning traveller biobank. Additional requirements will be refining the input and extraction of structured clinical data into and out of the electronic patient record, Epic (see job description). You will be encouraged to observe and if appropriate contribute to our returning traveller clinic and will have the opportunity to observe our specialist infection clinics. A minimum of 2 years post registration is essential. An interest in a career in infectious diseases, public health, research or data science, and programming skills including proficiency in R or SQL are desirable. Key skills include an ability to draft to high quality, attention to detail and an ability to work between teams. The infectious diseases department at UCLH comprises a dynamic, friendly and welcoming team with a breadth of specialist interests in both clinical and academic aspects of infectious diseases and tropical medicine. There are close links with infection related pathology specialties (microbiology/virology/parasitology) and frequent opportunities for both timetabled and ad hoc learning. You will have access to our highly regarded resident education programme, including weekly journal club, case‑based returning traveller teaching, audit, research meetings and grand round. Feedback from these is outstanding. You will have the opportunity to observe and if appropriate deliver clinics in our busy returning traveller clinic (3000 patients seen in the last year) and to observe highly specialist infection and tropical clinics and multi‑disciplinary meetings (e.g. leprosy, leishmaniasis, hydatid). Additional paid locum work in the infection division on the UCLH Trust Bank is frequently available. Supported by the Biobank Clinical Team, you will complete the necessary permissions to establish a research tissue biobank: ethics application, Human Tissue Authority licence, and registration in the UK Clinical Research Collaboration Tissue Directory. You will support us in patient and public involvement and engagement activities and in the creation of a biobank access committee. Working with HTD clinicians and specific data project teams, you will further refine the advanced Epic capabilities that have been developed to enable the entry and automated extraction of clinical and laboratory data. You will support us in creating and curating a comprehensive structured digital repository of clinical data in patients presenting with acute illness following recent travel to the tropics. This will provide a unique resource of imported infections within the UK, and the data backbone of the biobank. You will support our collaboration with the international organisation Geosentinel, ensuring clinical EPIC data are accurate and robust, and assisting with data extraction, validation and submission to Geosentinel. You will be supported in pursuing a funding application for further academic work in a data science discipline if appropriate. We are happy to have informal conversations with shortlisted candidates. Person Specification Knowledge and Qualifications Medical qualification MBBS with full valid registration at GMC Valid ALS training certification GCP trained by start date Experience Minimum of 2 years post registration experience Familiarity with principle of clinical research including Good Clinical Practice.
