Reporting to the Infectious Diseases Supervisor, the Scientist – Infectious Diseases is responsible for the accurate processing, analysis, and reporting of microbiology, serology, and molecular specimens in accordance with established laboratory procedures and referral protocols. This is a full-time position requiring flexibility to work across all rostered shifts from Monday to Sunday between 7:00 am and midnight. The role also forms part of a 24/7 roster, requiring participation in after‑hours, weekend, and public holiday shifts. Your key responsibilities will include: Process, interpret, and report microbiology, serology, and molecular samples in accordance with established laboratory procedures. Follow up results that require additional testing or clarification. Authorise and verify completed results, ensuring appropriate comments are added in line with protocols for significantly abnormal findings. Communicate urgent or critical results promptly via telephone or electronic transmission, and accurately document all calls in the Laboratory Information System (LIS). Perform departmental quality control (QC) procedures and promptly report any issues to the Team Leader or Department Supervisor. Monitor, investigate, and follow up overdue or outstanding specimens to ensure timely resolution. Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment; attempt first‑line remediation of malfunctions and report unresolved issues to the Team Leader/Department Supervisor. Contribute to the initiation, evaluation, and trialling of new methods or technologies within the department as required. Assist in the training and mentoring of new or less experienced staff as directed by the Department Supervisor. Monitor departmental consumable stock levels and assist with ordering to maintain adequate supply. Perform associated duties that support the core functions of the department as required. To be successful you will have: Full and unrestricted Australian work rights is required at the time of application. 2+ years experience in diagnostic microbiology, serology and molecular techniques is required. Bachelor of Science/Applied Science or an equivalent relevant degree. Strong attention to detail with excellent organisational and time‑management skills. Proven ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment. Demonstrated knowledge and experience working within a quality‑controlled laboratory environment, including an understanding of NATA accreditation requirements. High level of adaptability with the ability to work productively within a dynamic, evolving team. A positive, proactive "can‑do" attitude and a commitment to delivering exceptional customer service.
