Greater London, United Kingdom NHS Full time

Job Summary An enthusiastic and highly motivated clinician is invited to apply for a general consultant post at Newham University Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust. This newly created substantive post of 10 PAs will join an existing team of six paediatricians. Candidates should have appropriate training and experience in general paediatrics. While the post has no neonatal commitments, experience complementing the existing subspecialties or helping develop a new subspecialty would be beneficial, and paediatric subspecialty experience is exceptionally welcome. Paediatric ward is a very busy department looking after a very deprived and young paediatric population. The department collaborates with three other sites in the trust and works closely with the paediatric network, serving a diverse population of 2.5 million across East London – roughly 6,000 patients every day, speaking over 60 different languages. All applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of achieving a CCT (or equivalent) at the date of interview. The interview will be conducted in early January 2026. Responsibilities A formal job plan will be reviewed between the appointee and the Clinical Director, three months after the commencement of the post. The timetable will be flexible and can be arranged in discussion with the appointee to meet the requirements of the new consultant contract and the service needs of the department. The plan will be approved by the Clinical Director and Divisional Director and then reviewed at least annually, setting out the consultant’s duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. Key duties include delivering clinical care in the newly built, state‑of‑the‑art Children and Young People’s Rainbow Centre, managing high‑dependency care, coordinating transfers to tertiary centres, participating in oncology care pathways with UCLH and GOSH, and working with adult colleagues to ensure smooth transition of care for chronic conditions such as haemoglobinopathies and diabetes mellitus.
