Join to apply for the Leeds Lights Technician role at Leeds City Council Job Details Location: Leeds, United Kingdom Salary: £28,598 – £31,022 per annum Hours: 37 hours per week (over a 7‑day week) Contract: Permanent Work environment: Outdoor, unsociable hours, and weekend work Leeds Lights is a small team responsible for fabricating, manufacturing, and installing the city’s festive lighting displays and banner scheme. The team works year‑round, with major installation periods in the summer and winter. Job Purpose Assist with the operational delivery of Leeds Lights: manufacture, installation, recovery, maintenance and storage of festive light displays and city dressing banners. Responsibilities Install and recover city centre and outer ward festive light lamp column motifs, signs, tree lighting, catenary spans, displays and internal decorations. Produce, maintain and refurbish motifs and displays in the Leeds Lights workshop at Seacroft depot. Install and recover city dressing banners in accordance with council contracted scheme. Drive and safely operate council-owned and hired commercial vehicles, including vehicle-mounted hoists. Install, maintain, test and repair electrical equipment (status sensors, timer clocks, lamp columns, street furniture). Use, maintain, test and repair hand and power tools and portable appliances. Promote health, safety and welfare practices for all staff, contractors, visitors, and the public. Follow site instructions, risk assessments, method statements and safe working practices. Assist with stock inventory management and safe storage of operational materials. Assist with temporary traffic management and street plans for festive displays. Communicate effectively with contractors, clients, stakeholders, trade unions and agencies. Manage contractors and agency staff on site, as required. Adapt to changing circumstances and assist other services as commensurate to grade. Participate in appraisal, training and development activities. Work collaboratively with colleagues, seeking help and advice when necessary. Attend relevant meetings, training days and events as requested. Comply with Council policies (child protection, health & safety, security, confidentiality, data protection). Report concerns appropriately. Uphold equality and anti‑discriminatory practices, challenge incidents of racism, bullying, harassment and abuse. Adhere to the flexibility protocol and work within its parameters. Qualifications G39 Electrical safety certificate (or willingness to qualify within 3 months). IPAF accreditation for working at heights with MEWPs (or willingness to qualify within 3 months). C1 driving licence and CPC driver qualification (or willingness to qualify within 6 months). Experience with outdoor lighting installations, electrical and mechanical systems. Knowledge of working at height regulations, LOLER, and MEWP usage. Understanding of health and safety procedures and legislation. Experience operating basic electrical equipment and systems. Essential Requirements Demonstrated ability to work on own initiative and make practical decisions. Capable of working calmly under pressure. Able to work alone and as part of a small team. Proficient in manual handling and working at height safely. Strong communication skills with diverse audiences. Competence in IT packages – Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint. Desirable Requirements Problem‑solving and handling multiple priorities. Contribution to service standards and improvements. Knowledge of Electricity at Work Act and current lighting regulations. Understanding of council’s key priorities and ambitions. Experience of street works in busy city‑centre environments. Experience within local government.
