OverviewClinical Nurse Specialist in Pain Management, Band 7 • Full time position (37.5h/week).This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and motivated Pain Management Service, working cross site at Chelsea & Westminster and West Middlesex University Hospitals. This is an established service that provides highly specialised services to adult and paediatric patients with acute and chronic pain, within a multidisciplinary setting. The Clinical Nurse Specialist is expected to support all areas of the service and work in conjunction with the Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist to help in developing individuals within the service and the service as a whole. The outpatient role involves supporting the pain clinic, neuromodulation and capsaicin service. Additionally, conducting TENS, post procedure follow up and medication review clinics.There is great scope in this role to develop both personally and professionally. We are looking for an individual with some experience of working within a pain management service who is looking for a developmental opportunity or a new challenge. Role responsibilities Receiving referrals. Providing skilled assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of specialist care within defined guidelines and protocols. Referring to other disciplines and agencies. Providing expert advice and guidance to nurses & other disciplines. Providing specialist training and education to own and other professions. Setting and monitoring standards of care and treatment. Participating in audit and research activity. Disseminating good practice. Providing skilled professional leadership. Ensuring effective communication between all service providers across the care pathway. The post holder will play a key role in improving the delivery of our service to meet the needs of our patients. This will be through working in both the inpatient and outpatient pain service. The role involves reviewing inpatients with acute and chronic pain. The outpatient role involves supporting the Pain Clinic, neuromodulation and capsaicin service. Additionally, conducting TENS, post procedure follow up and medication review clinics. This is an integrated role and the post holder will work closely with the rest of the pain service, to allow for cross cover and support for the service. The service has developed as a multidisciplinary service involving physiotherapists, psychologists, neurosurgeons, neurologists, as well as pain physicians and the successful applicant will be a valuable part of this team. Some roles may require weekend shifts at multiple sites. Clinical Responsibilities To work as an autonomous practitioner, delivering expert nursing service for inpatients and outpatients. This includes participating in nurse-led follow up clinics for patients after pain related procedures, including telephone clinics and medication review clinics. Provide advice and support to patient and relatives during treatments or therapies such as spinal cord stimulators (SCS), percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (PENS) and capsaicin treatment. Manage and discharge patients within agreed department protocols and guidelines. To arrange appropriate follow up and discuss with the consultant as necessary. To provide specialist advice and education to patients to ensure that they can make an informed choice about therapies and medicines. To have a role in guiding neuromodulation services. Accurately maintaining databases for SCS, capsaicin and inpatient pain patients. Establishing and maintaining good working relationships with supporting clinical services. Participating in pain service multidisciplinary meetings. Learn and participate in reprogramming SCS patients. To have a role in coordinating theatre lists for patients requiring neuromodulation. Ensuring effective communication between administration staff and consultants. Responsibility for liaising with patients about their pain journey maintaining communication and answering their questions. Being aware of side effects and efficacy of drugs and treatments involved, ensuring patient’s results are checked and abnormalities reported. Contacting patients when they are required to attend theatre for the SCS trial and implant. Providing a high standard of nursing care to patients whilst working in close collaboration and cooperation with other members of the multidisciplinary team. Education To recognise areas for clinical development and respond appropriately to these, utilising available resources. To assist in the on-going development and structuring of the department as a learning environment. To promote change and collaborating in the development of innovative practice. To support the induction and orientation of new staff and evaluating staff performance. Take part in the development of patient educational tools, such as written information. To keep up to date with current and potential research, and information relevant to the care of patients in the clinical area. To attend courses as deemed relevant and to attend meetings and conferences as appropriate. To be responsible for developing and sustaining own knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness. Management Responsibilities Report any potential complaints or untoward incidents to the Lead Nurse and participate in the Trusts Risk management process. Provide clinical leadership to more junior nurses. To have a role in ordering specialist equipment, such as TENS machines and Neuromodulation kit. To develop new initiatives to run cost effective services, within the constraints of budgets and resources. Professional and Personal Development Ensure own professional learning needs are identified and met through the Knowledge & Skills Framework (KSF). To promote an open and friendly working environment. Actively participate in departmental educational meetings. Keep abreast of current research and information relevant to the care of patients. Meet regularly with members of own team and ensure effective communication with other team members. Establish and maintain links with other clinical nurse specialists across the organisation and outside of the organisation to share knowledge and to provide mutual support. Attend relevant education and training courses, including nurse network meetings and conferences to enhance own professional development. Be involved in the setting of standards, clinical audit and maintain a high standard of nursing care. Actively participate as a member of the team within the research department, disseminate research and audit by assisting in the preparation of posters, research papers for meetings, conferences and publications. During periods of absence or leave ensure that appropriate cover is in place to provide continuous support for patients and carers. Act in accordance with the Nursing & Midwifery Council Code of Professional Practice and guide others to do the same. Conversant with and maintain local Trust policies such as fire, manual handling, sick policy.
