Clinical Technologist – Nuclear Medicine A Clinical Technologist will be part of the team that delivers the clinical Nuclear Medicine service in The Christie. The role works in partnership with the Lead Clinical Technologist to manage the Clinical PET‑CT service, using the two SPECT‑CT cameras and the PET‑CT scanner and providing extensive molecular radiotherapy and in‑vitro services. The working pattern includes extended days and weekends. Key Responsibilities To manage all aspects of the clinical PET‑CT service. Perform patient investigations in accordance with laid down protocols and ensure all staff training for clinical PET‑CT is appropriate and up to date. Supervise more junior staff and assist in training of staff, students and trainees. Write and update protocols and training programmes for all clinical PET‑CT procedures, including contrast studies. Involve in the PET‑CT Academy for delivery of PET‑CT study days. Maintain accreditation of the service. Perform patient investigations and treatments. Authorise diagnostic tests under written procedures and in accordance with IRMER. Refer requests not covered by the procedures to the ARSAC licence holder. Collaborate with referring doctors or research nurses to obtain correctly written request cards. Schedule tests according to an appropriate timetable, ensuring all preparations necessary for their conduct are made and all supplies are ordered. Administration to patients for diagnosis and therapy. Calculating the volume of material to be used for an individual patient dose, taking radioactive decay into account. Withdraw the required volume into the receptacle to be used for administration (e.g., syringe or cup). Confirm the correct amount of radioactivity in the patient dose using a radionuclide calibrator and adjust if necessary. Administer the preparation to the patient according to the agreed protocol. Ensure accurate documentation and provide radiation protection instructions. Imaging procedures. Carry out imaging studies in accordance with laid‑down protocols and those developed specifically for clinical trials. Set up and oversee QC testing of imaging equipment, checking results and bringing problems to physics staff. Perform imaging, review results and decide on further imaging where necessary. Prepare, analyse and present results, including technical reports, and judge suitability of regions of interest. In‑vitro procedures. Carry out assays of radioactive materials from patient samples. Prepare reference solutions and blood samples, perform assays using specialised equipment and software. Process results and maintain records according to departmental procedures. Department administration. Act as lead practitioner, organise, manage and take responsibility for the PET/CT service. Collaborate with Alliance Medical and other Trusts on the PET/CT National Contract for Greater Manchester. Serve as point of contact for users, dealing with patients, carers and colleagues in a helpful manner. Handle patient enquiries and complaints, communicating with the Lead Clinical Technologist for resolution. Support staffing and performance management, optimising working patterns. Act as RPS for PET/CT service and associated areas. Teaching, supervision and human resources. Supervise junior members and support training of staff, students and other department staff. Perform formalised assessments of staff training and develop Personal Development Plans. Participate in departmental quality groups and share good practice. Monitor, audit and evaluate clinical practice, propose policies and training programmes, ensuring seamless implementation. Lead education and training of other healthcare professionals and students in PET/CT investigations. Manage staff attendance, sickness and disciplinary issues. Deliver teaching at graduate, postgraduate and national levels in partnership with higher education institutions. Demonstrate agreed values and hold accountability for attitude and behaviour. Governance, audit and finance. Undertake formal presentations of clinical and technical cases to multidisciplinary teams. Collect performance data for KPI compliance and manage breaches. Attend PET/CT board meetings regularly. Maintain awareness of budgetary constraints, ordering and using radiopharmaceuticals and supplies efficiently. Produce business cases for new equipment and service development and manage procurement. Qualifications • Degree in a relevant science subject or equivalent; PgDip or equivalent. • Substantial experience in clinical nuclear medicine and PET‑CT. • Ability to maintain or achieve membership of the Register of Clinical Technologists or State Registration as a Radiographer.
