Job overviewWe are currently a small team within Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust caring for patients referred with gynaecological problems within the Surgical Oncology Directorate. We have been given an exciting opportunity to expand the service to increase capacity for patients and to bring waiting times down. We are looking for a kind, caring and enthusiastic Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist in Colposcopy to join the team and support the Colposcopy and Rapid Access Gynaecology Services at Guy's Hospital in the Out-Patient environment. Applications from BSCCP accredited Nurse Colposcopists are welcome but training will be provided if required. Accreditation is not essential. Main duties of the jobIf already accredited with the BSCCP the postholder will undertake diagnostic and therapeutic colposcopy in nurse led clinics and manage their own case load of patients. If not already accredited the postholder will complete the BSCCP Colposcopy training programme and become proficient in diagnostic and therapeutic colposcopy, eventually managing own case load of patients in nurse led clinics.
Detailed job description and main responsibilitiesIn addition to the direct clinical colposcopy role the postholder will support the Colposcopy Department and the Rapid Access Gynaecology Clinic ensuring both departments are organised, safe and efficient. With an in-depth knowledge of gynaecology and health promotion the Nurse Colposcopist is responsible for the co-ordination of the clinics, ensuring that there is adequate nursing cover to run the sessions. The post holder will work collaboratively with the Lead Nurse Colposcopist, the Lead Colposcopist and the Lead for Hysteroscopy to deliver clinical objectives for the Colposcopy and Rapid Access Gynaecology Service. The post holder will act as a Colposcopy trainer when this is time appropriate in accordance with their experience and appropriate training. The post holder will work closely with colleagues in the Gynaecology Oncology Rapid Access and Hysteroscopy Team. Support patients throughout their pathway acting as patient advocate where necessary. Provide clinical advice and guidance with appropriate training. Ensure failsafe processes are carried out efficiently and accurately. General management and organisation of the department. Team management and support including staff rota and PDRs for junior staff. Undertake Cervical Screening Sample Taker training to provide Nurse-Led Cytology clinics.
Person specificationQualifications/Education- BSC/1st degree (health related) or equivalent qualification/training and experience
- Professional knowledge acquired at degree level supplemented by specialist training, experience and short courses to Masters level equivalent.
- To have or be working towards a Masters Degree
- RN1 Registered Nurse on the NMC register. To hold the appropriate level for the area of speciality.
- Extensive experience of working autonomously at an advanced level within the specialist area delivering effective patient focused care.
- Proven evidence of management / leadership skills and autonomous practice
- Experience of delivering patient advocacy
- Experience in gynaecology or women's health
- Cervical Screening Sample Taker
- Advanced clinical, managerial and leadership skills
- Proven listening / counselling skills with the ability to manage complex situation and appropriately deliver sensitive and difficult outcomes.
- Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues
- Ability to clinically lead & influence staff
- Ability to interpret and analyse complex data and findings
- Sensitivity based on knowledge
- Diplomatic
- Flexible and positive approach to work
