Job Summary Specialist Nurse for Children in Care, Band 6, Permanent, part‑time (one day a week). Location: Sinfin Health Centre, Derby. Contract: Permanent. Hours: Part time – hours per week (Monday or Friday). Responsibilities Undertake health assessments and formulate health care plans for children and young people in care living in Derby City and within a miles radius, signposting and making referrals to other agencies/services as appropriate. Act as an advocate for children and young people in care. Work with social care colleagues to ensure the health needs identified at health assessments are addressed appropriately with ongoing follow‑up and review. Attend children in care reviews as appropriate, with particular emphasis on children and young people that are hard to reach. Contribute to the continuing development of an integrated, robust and modern service delivering high quality care to children, young people and their carers. Work closely with the health visiting and school nurse service to ensure the health needs of children in care are being met. Lead and implement health histories for young people leaving care. Provide expert clinical advice, complete statutory review health assessments, deliver health education and develop and deliver training programmes to a range of professionals. Have excellent written and oral communication skills. Be able to work independently and effectively within a small team. Essential Criteria Qualified to diploma / degree level as Registered General Nurse, Registered Children’s Nurse or Registered Mental Health Nurse. Experience working with children or young people with complex emotional needs. Post‑registration qualification in teaching and assessing or evidence of experience and competency. Interpersonal and communication skills. Information and technology skills. Assessment skills in child growth, development, emotional and physical well‑being. Ability to travel the geographical area. Knowledge and experience of multi‑agency working. Knowledge and experience of safeguarding children. Knowledge of the health needs of children and young people in care aged 0– [cut‑off year]. Excellent understanding of local and national public health agenda. Desirable Criteria Knowledge and experience in contraception and sexual health advice. Knowledge and experience in child and adolescent mental health. Post‑registration qualification in health visiting / community practitioner public health nursing or specialist practitioner school nursing. Experience using SystmOne computer database.
