Southwark Music Service is looking for dedicated Curriculum Music Tutors to join our amazing team and help deliver high-quality music education across the borough. We are seeking tutors specifically for Wednesdays and Thursdays from January as well as various other vacancies across the week. Employer: Southwark Music Contract Type: Self-Employed Start Date: January 2026 Closing Date: 11th December 2025 at 23:59 Pay: Tutors will be paid directly by schools for their teaching. We recommend to schools that this is at a rate of £43.87 an hour. Tutors will be paid by Southwark Council for all training and CPD at a rate of £27.42 an hour. As a Curriculum Music Tutor, you will provide music education of the highest quality to children and young people across Southwark, supporting the core and extension roles of the National Plan for Music Education. You will plan, deliver, and evaluate whole‑class and small‑group lessons, foster performance opportunities, and maintain positive relationships with pupils and staff. Key responsibilities Plan, prepare, teach, and evaluate curriculum music lessons in line with the Southwark Music Service scheme of work. Liaise with schools regarding timetabling, pupil progress, and provide written assessments where necessary. Organise and participate in pupil performances and promote external playing opportunities. Foster positive relationships with staff and students and be familiar with school behaviour policies. Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of teaching developments and apply them in lessons. Keep accurate records of Southwark Music Service instruments and ensure proper care. Ensure the safety and wellbeing of pupils, reporting concerns appropriately. Attend all required training sessions and meetings. About You A degree or equivalent professional qualification in music or music education. Experience in group music teaching and a strong understanding of effective pedagogy. The ability to inspire and engage children in a positive learning environment. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with children, parents, and colleagues. A flexible attitude to accommodate the varying needs of schools and pupils. Strong time management, organisational skills, and the ability to work proactively. Willingness to travel between schools and accept constructive feedback. A commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in music education. About the Team You will join a dedicated team of tutors delivering curriculum music tuition to a wide range of abilities in schools across Southwark.
