Chief Engineer, Data Centre Engineering Operations – West London AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. As Chief Engineer, you will ensure all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment in the data center operates at peak efficiency. Your role will involve planned preventative maintenance, daily corrective work, and emergency response, and you will be the focal point for facility operations across Amazon data centers. Key Responsibilities Train and support the Engineering team in troubleshooting and operating electrical and mechanical equipment. Implement and execute site‑specific training exercises covering generators, switchgear, UPS, PDUs, AHUs, chillers, etc. Oversee day‑to‑day operation and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment in data center sites. Operate independently with limited direct management. Assist in the design and build‑out of new facilities and perform root cause analysis of equipment failures. Act as escalation point for all facilities‑related issues within the data center region; work overtime hours as needed. Diagnose and report facility and data‑center‑level events within internal Service Level Agreements (SLA). Create and deploy standard practices for Engineering Operations Technicians, Chief Engineers, and vendor support teams. Ensure all safety procedures are adhered to by vendors and AWS staff. Respond to off‑hour emergency calls and assist with investigation, mitigation, and recovery. Work in an environment that operates 24/7 with after‑hours support as needed. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. Extensive industry experience with in‑depth knowledge of UPS, backup generator systems, and generic mechanical‑room infrastructure. NVQ Level 3 in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent). Experience in data‑center operations and on‑call support for mission‑critical facilities. Fundamental knowledge of network design, layout, and low‑voltage cabling. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and work in elevated locations. Physical capability to work at height from ladders and in a noisy environment with ear protection. Work 24/7 environment with after‑hours support as needed. Physical Requirements Work at height and from ladders. Perform physical tasks during the shift.
