clinician in amputee and prosthetic rehabilitation
3 days ago
Position Summary The post is part‑time (0.5 FTE), onsite over 3 days. Exact days and hours may be discussed, but a Thursday commitment is essential due to existing MDT meetings and commitments. The caseload is varied, covering adults and children, acquired or congenital, primary and established, unilateral and multi‑limb loss. The amputee rehabilitation pathway at Guys & St Thomas (GSTT) includes acute and sub‑acute amputee rehabilitation unit. You will forge close working relationships with the lead physiotherapists. If you love working closely with a tight‑knit team, thrive on service development, and are inspired by the possibilities of prosthetic technology, we’d love to meet you. Due to the Christmas period interviews will be completed in early January. Face‑to‑face interviews are preferred. Key Responsibilities Lead and provide an efficient, effective specialist physiotherapy service for people considering amputation and those with acquired or congenital lower limb loss referred to the team. Maintain and develop clinical support, education, and service links with referring acute trusts; serve as an expert physiotherapist in prosthetic rehabilitation in South East London. Clinically manage and develop the physiotherapy team based at Bowley Close and contribute nationally to specialist amputee and physiotherapy organisations and education events. Work with counselling and specialist MDT to develop MDT policies, protocols, guidelines, and standards to promote best practice at both uni‑professional and MDT levels. Lead physiotherapy‑specific areas of amputee and prosthetic clinical practice development, governance, service improvement and the development of care pathways. Provide all aspects of physiotherapy assessment and treatment for outpatient amputees (acquired and congenital) and patients referred for pre‑amputation consultation to the regional amputee and prosthetic centre. Manage a complex caseload, including multi‑limb loss patients and those with associated pathologies. Provide specialist advice and expertise to ensure high‑quality intervention and support staff development. Use clinical reasoning and specialist skills to deliver the best ongoing treatment for all patients; provide expert advice to other physiotherapists and students to ensure equitable standards of care. Carry your own caseload of amputees, likely involving highly complex physical, social, and psychological needs. Professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your work, including knowledge of indications, precautions, techniques, and equipment in line with national and trust clinical guidelines, protocols and pathways where they exist. Prioritise own and team’s clinical caseload considering clinical service priorities using specialist and managerial knowledge to underpin decisions. Communicate timely and effectively with the clinical lead, head of the community amputee pathway and service manager. Make expert recommendations to the Consultant, Rehabilitation Medicine or AHP equivalent, clinical lead of service, and prosthetists regarding initial prosthetic prescription or changes to prescription, identifying clinical reasoning for prescription choice. Provide specialist advice and guidance regarding prosthetic prescription as part of the physiotherapy staff clinical recommendations. Provide physiotherapy to the visiting ward‑round service at Kings College Hospital or other hospitals as required; lead the visiting ward in the absence of the head of service or on request. Assess and treat people considering lower limb amputation, providing professional opinion regarding likely functional outcome and prosthetic use, and facilitate patients to connect with others who have undergone the same level amputation and provide contact details for specialist amputee support organisations. Be the expert in physiotherapy for this patient cohort based on theoretical knowledge and experience; be available to frequent requests for specialist advice and guidance by colleagues, junior team members, and other healthcare professionals both within and external to the trust. Working Conditions The role is based at the Bowley Close Rehabilitation Centre, Crystal Palace. The position is fully onsite, with no weekly remote working allocated. The post is part‑time (0.5 FTE) over 3 days a week, with Thursday essential. The working pattern may be flexible within the team to meet service needs.
