Job SummaryA post is available in the Histopathology Department which works in a busy modern teaching hospital laboratory with ~70,000 surgical requests per year. The department offers a dynamic team of office, laboratory and consultant pathologist staff, active professional development, expansion into advanced dissection and reporting roles, digital pathology reporting and use of the CEREBRO specimen tracking system. Key responsibilities: Work as a specialist BMS in dissection/reception and section cutting services. Carry out specimen dissection for RcPath categories A‑C. Perform frozen sections and Mohs frozen sections. Support Band 7 staff including supervision, training and quality control. Carry out audits and appraisals. Support staff CPD. Lead small groups of staff, participate in training and mentoring. Contribute to service development and implementation of Lean methodology. Communicate complex technical service information to colleagues and patients. Participate in departmental meetings. Answer telephone enquiries on methodologies and service requirements. Explain results of technical procedures, suggest alternative techniques. Manage own work and prioritise specialised services. Ensure correct patient ID and quality/error logging procedures. Perform histological techniques: fixation, processing, orientation, embedding, sectioning and staining. Assist Pathologists during specimen dissection, maintain cleanliness of work areas. Person Specification – Essential Qualifications: BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent. Specialist Diploma from IBMS or equivalent in histopathology. State registration with Health Professions Council (HPC). Significant postgraduate state registration in a clinical setting. Essential Skills: Able to lead small groups of staff.
