Job Overview Kestrel Ward, North Wales Adolescent Service. We are pleased to offer the opportunity for an experienced and motivated Nurse with excellent communication skills and a passion for delivering high quality care to apply for the post of Band 6 Senior Staff Nurse on Kestrel Ward at the North Wales Adolescent Service in Abergele, North Wales. Working in a Tier 4 inpatient CAMHS setting with young people between the age of 12‑17 years old, you will need to have a flexible approach and be able to adapt your skills and abilities to suit a range of mental health needs and presentations. As a senior staff nurse you will act as case manager for a small group of young people and work closely with the wider MDT to plan, deliver and review the care provided on the ward. In addition you will contribute to the day‑to‑day routine and support for young people on the ward and ultimately support their discharge back to the community. Main duties of the job As a senior member of the nursing team you will be expected to contribute to the development of more junior colleagues, students and the wider service. Individuals who do not have direct inpatient CAMHS experience but are able to demonstrate significant experience in other transferable areas of mental health or CAMHS are encouraged to apply. You are applying for a Full‑time equivalent post. Kestrel ward provides a 24/7 service and you will need to be flexible to meet the range of shift patterns required, including night shifts. Additional note for Trainee Senior Staff Nurse (Annex 21) – to undertake a fast‑track programme of development over 9‑18 months depending on competencies required to meet Band 6 role. The role will include both classroom and learning in clinical practice to enhance existing skills. The role will cover a mix of carrying out autonomous clinical work that fits within current competencies alongside demonstrated and observed new skills development. The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply. Person specification Qualifications And/or Knowledge Essential criteria Must be first level registered Mental Health Nurse Post registration qualification in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Desirable criteria Teaching and assessing qualification Experience Essential criteria Experience of working in in‑patient Adolescent Mental Health Work Evidence of continuing professional development relating to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Nursing Desirable criteria Evidence of working in Adolescent Mental Health Services (e.g., community services) Aptitude And Abilities Essential criteria Ability to generate effective therapeutic relationships with young people (patients) A clear understanding of the nursing process and the Mental Health Measures and how they relate to children and young people with mental health problems Ability to communicate with multi‑disciplinary team colleagues and other professionals, both verbally and in writing Ability to be assertive and to take a leadership role in teams Sound knowledge of child development and factors that are likely to contribute to mental health difficulties in children and young people who have mental health problems Experience of service evaluation and audit and a good knowledge of the components of clinical governance Sound knowledge of issues affecting the nursing of young people with mental health problems Ability to assess mental health problems. This requires the ability to use information gathered from a variety of sources to provide a formulation of a mental health problem. Ability to assess and manage risk, in particular being able to identify risk factors relating to mental health problems in young people and to implement appropriate risk management strategies Group work skills Ability to provide and engage in effective clinical supervision Ability to work cooperatively with other agencies and disciplines Ability to participate in training in non‑aversive holding techniques including restrictive physical intervention training Ability to remain calm in the personal management of challenging situations Knowledge of teamwork and team dynamics and an ability to work in teams and in a multidisciplinary setting Good reflective ability and an understanding of its importance in the context of interpersonal working Ability to organise and plan work activities for nursing team Ability to work flexibly and to adapt clinical approach to needs of clients, working in partnership with client and parents/carers A good and developing level of self‑awareness and how one’s own experiences may impact upon one’s attitudes and interactions.
