Job Summary We are looking for suitably qualified nurses to join our proactive team. Equally, if you are a newly qualified nurse who would like a career in acute nursing but are worried that it may be too early in your career we are also happy to ensure you can work on the unit and support would be provided to ensure you flourish. We have one dedicated Education Facilitator who ensures that all staff are trained and equipped to work within the ever‑changing ward environment. Newly qualified nurses will have a 12‑month preceptorship with one of our experienced staff. We require excellent nurses who want exciting, challenging roles, to deliver first‑class high‑quality patient care. We are a unique unit that has an Enhanced Care Area (ECA) where we provide care to Level 1 patients. Each Staff Nurse will get a rotation to our ECA. These patients come directly from A&E. The ECA beds will take patients who require respiratory support, as well as cardiac monitoring in the acute phase of their illness, and other patients requiring a high‑dependency setting. Our staff have the opportunity to undertake blood gases, ECG’s and undertake the Advanced Life Skills Course in order to maintain our highest standards of acute medical care. Enhanced DBS Certificate with the checking of the Children’s and Adults’ Barred Lists is required for this post. Job Responsibilities Key Duties Contribute to the delivery of quality patient care by participating in and providing the assessment, planning, provision and evaluation of individualised care. Assist in the admission, transfer and discharge of patients in accordance with local policy. Participate in the development and monitoring of standards of care and other quality initiatives in a positive manner. Fulfill the role of the departmental triage nurse, utilising advanced skills of assessment, prioritisation, decision‑making, risk management and communication. Always be caring, approachable and display a consistently professional manner. Promote the safeguarding of vulnerable patients in line with national and local policy. Clinical & Professional Responsibilities Maintain Professional Registration. Adhere to the NMC Code of Practice and the Scope of Professional Practice. Ensure that nursing care is appropriate, provided and consistent with clinical guidelines. Participate in the prevention and control of infection, attend induction and regular training, apply training in practice and include IPC in the personal development plan. Report and record any untoward incidents. Assist in the promotion of effective communication with all staff, patients and relatives and other departments as required. Bear responsibility for the security and maintenance of equipment belonging to the department. Assist the Nurse Coordinator in achievement of key performance indicators for the department and the Trust. Administrative Responsibilities Utilise knowledge of hospital systems/procedures to appropriately divert or refer patients to alternative services and pathways. Ensure that the recording of patient care is comprehensive, concise and in line with NMC and Trust policy. Keep the Patient Tracking IT system current and reflective of patients in your care. Teaching & Training Responsibilities Facilitate the acquisition of Band 5 grade competencies and skills. Ensure fulfilment of requirements for professional updating and maintain a personal record for future registration. Participate in the teaching of students and the in‑service training of qualified nurses and health‑care assistants, acting as facilitator, mentor or preceptor. Line Management / Supervisory Responsibilities Act as a preceptor for newly qualified staff nurses. Deputise for the senior nurse where necessary. Serve as a role model for junior colleagues and students and a support mechanism for senior colleagues. Research & Audit Participate in research, special projects or audits as requested by the Senior Nursing Team. Contribute to the setting, maintaining and monitoring of standards of care within the department through audit involvement. Values We are Kind. We are Open. We are Inclusive. Qualifications First‑level registered nurse (degree or diploma). Current NMC registration. Evidence of continuing professional development. Knowledge & Experience Knowledge of NMC professional standards and the code of practice. Experience working in a clinical environment. Understanding of NMC professional revalidation. Experience working within a multi‑disciplinary team. Understanding of national, regional, and local NHS issues. Experience providing and receiving complex, sensitive information. Skills Excellent communication skills and ability to build relationships at all levels. Effectively prioritise and coordinate own workload. Ability to de‑escalate complex situations. Effective written, verbal and non‑verbal communication with patients, relatives and carers. Confidentiality awareness at all times. Computer literacy, e.g., experience with electronic patient record systems. Other Requirements Frequent moderate physical effort for several short periods (manual handling of patients and equipment). Frequent concentration required for drug calculation and administration. Dealing with frequent interruptions and competing demands. Ability to work within highly distressing or emotional circumstances, e.g. end‑of‑life care. Ability to communicate distressing information and in a challenging environment. Ability to provide direct clinical care as required on ward or department. Potential exposure to blood or body fluids.
